Teams are not ranked in the traditional way based on your Win - Loss ratio. Since two teams are playing simultaneously and are working cooperatively to score points, there is no winner or loser in a match. Instead, teams are ranked based on their average match score. The top 16 teams are guaranteed entry into the finals. In the finals, teams will get automatically paired up with another team to create an "Alliance" and they will get one chance to score as many points as possible. The Alliance who scores the most points; in their one match, will win their division and move on to the overall finals in the VEX Arena.
Teams are ranked based on the traditional Win - Loss ratio. Two teams are paired together randomly, as an "alliance" during qualification matches and compete against other alliances. If a team earns a top spot in their division, they are given a better opportunity to choose to form an alliance with another team during the alliance selection process. Only the top 8 alliances will move into the division finals and compete for the opportunity to compete in the World Championship Finals matches in the VEX Arena.
