Outbound logistics is where the final product is finished and completed, however it still needs to find it's way to the customer. Product is either shipped instantly or needs to be stored for a while depending on how lean the company is and the product's stocking needs.
Zespri is responsible for organising/coordinating shipping to get packed fruit to wholesalers/customers. Due to Hort16A's short window of staying ripe and at a good condition, it will need to be either stored or shipped in a chiller/chilled truck. As it may have long distance to travel, there may need to be a temperature on the truck for quality control to check if there was ever a time where it was not chilled so that the kiwifruit does not go off. Quality control is further carried out as fruit could be damaged during transport, especially overseas.
Due to there now being two types (Hort16A and G3) of kiwifruit being exported, there will need to be more capacity to ship these products to their desinations. This will lead to an increase in exporting, however due to there being increased revenue this will not cut into profits.
Since G3 has a larger selling window, it is able to be left at the packhouses for atleast 3 weeks (chilled) before it needs to be sent to the wholesalers. This means that there will need to be an increased capacity in the packhouse for storage to keep these kiwifruit in.
In the packhouse, there may need to be an expansion to accommodate for the new varitey of kiwifruit to be stored. This will need to be expanded greatly as there is a hightened demand for gold kiwifruit, and since Zespri is now selling two varieties of kiwifruit, there will need to be double the room in the packhouse. The storage will need to be chilled and up to Zespri's standard.
There is also now more fruit of different varietys being shipped/trasported, e.g. Hamburg Sud and CMA CGM for containers, and Col carriers and Fresh Carriers for charter vessels, where Zespri contracts the whole ship to volume product being moved.
The innovation affects outbound logistics by causing Zespri to expand their packhouses, as well as their capacity to export. They are producing and exporting a larger amount of kiwifruit, therefore they will need to accomodate for this increase.
In the future, there may need to be another increase in capacity as either new varities come in, or there is an increase in the amount of gold and green kiwifruit that Zespri is growing. This is expected, so each capacity increase should be able to be sustainable and used in the future.
