The AVID student
AP/Honors course
Each student is expected to enroll in at least one AP/honors course. This should be a class that you either have great interest in, are strong in, or both.
We do not want to set you up for failure. We use test scores and student interest to help place students in the correct course of rigor.
Why?
The rigor and exposure to higher level thinking will:
Academically prepare you for the rigor experienced in college
Challenge you and teach you how to push through discomfort while being supported and encouraged
Prepare you for state testing and college exam testing
Involved
AVID students are encouraged to find one club or activity to get involved with. Rock Bridge has over 100 clubs and activities and if you can't find one that interests you, you can start your own.
Why?
Students who are involved in their school:
Have an increased sense of engagement or belonging
Have better attendance
More likely to have aspirations for continuing education after high school
Strong attendance
Students must keep a 90% attendance or higher. The A+ scholarship requires students to have 95% attendance and we strive for our students to keep this attendance rate.
Why?
Students who attend school regularly are:
More likely to succeed in academics
Building their skills
More likely to graduate
Good GPA
Many colleges accept students that hold a good GPA throughout high school. Our students are expected to hold a 2.5 GPA. We know that GPA is not everything but a piece of the process.
Why?
GPA is a good indicator of college acceptance.
Opens opportunities with scholarships and class choices.
A+ requires students to have a 2.5 or higher GPA to receive the A+ Scholarship.
AVID students spend time monitoring their grades and setting goals to ensure they have a good GPA.
Citizenship
Students should have good rapport with teachers and peers.
Creating good impressions and interactions with others is important in life .
Contribute positively to tutorials
Our students work together in tutorial groups once a week. We want this to be a positive experience for both the presenter and the group members. All can learn when the group functions properly.
Is positively involved with team-building activities
Activities to build community are common in our AVID curriculum and our students begin to refer to their class as their "AVID Family".
Excited and willing to miss school for campus visits
Our AVID classes visit at least two college campuses each year. The AVID teachers works to make sure students are communicating with their teachers in advance to get the work they will miss. They are responsible for making up all missed work.
