False. All students are welcomed and accepted into the AVID elective. Certain criteria is used to select AVID students into the elective. AVID's mission is to close the Opportunity Gap and using our specific criteria makes strides in accomplishing this mission.
False. AVID students must be able to take on challenging course work and must meet certain test scores in one or more of their standardized testing. Our students are bright and capable. Many of our students are enrolled in regular courses but are capable of taking high level course to challenging themselves. In AVID we support our students in the "middle" to push themselves in these classes using our AVID strategies.
False. This is all in your mindset. We ask students to do more than the average student; interact with the material given in class, take notes, collaborate with peers, communicate often and effectively with students. We ask our students to separate themselves and make a lasting impression on their teachers and those around them. Putting the strategies taught in place early ensure they will be ahead of the curve in college or future endeavors.
False. All students are welcomed into the AVID elective. People worry about the AP/honors courses for students that may not be there yet. We are more concerned with the challenge that students take on than the name of the course. When students have to push through discomfort and learn strategies to overcome this, we have succeeded in our learning. All students can be successful in AVID with the right amount of "individual determination".
False. As a Freshmen many students will take the following:
