Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of SCHOLARSHIP, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, and CHARACTER that were the basis for their selection. 

What current CRLS NHS members must do after induction:

The national NHS Constitution says members must continue demonstrating the four qualities on which they were selected: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

The 2024 Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Derry-Wood Chapter) bylaws state that current members must:

1. Maintain the required GPA

• Members inducted under the standards for graduating classes before 2028 must maintain a cumulative GPA of 87

• Members in the Class of 2028 and beyond must maintain a cumulative GPA of 92

2. Complete at least 10 community-service hours each semester of membership

• The Derry-Wood Chapter bylaws define service as voluntary activity without monetary or academic credit that directly benefits the community served; internships, jobs, and work experiences do not count

• Seniors who do not complete 10 hours in the fall must make up the shortfall in the spring, up to 15 hours

• Students are strongly encouraged to document  their community service hours through the  COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS TRACKER 

3. Participate regularly in chapter service projects

• The chapter must determine one or more service projects each year, and all members are expected to participate regularly

4. Continue demonstrating leadership and good character

• The local bylaws specifically say leadership should continue after induction

• Members are expected to maintain the standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character; falling below them may lead to discipline or consideration of dismissal

Any student who falls short in any of these pillars, for example, violates school rules, has excessive absences (AV or NC), falls below the required GPA, or does not complete the required community service hours, will be placed on Warning.
