Welcome, students and caregivers, to the MLK School music page! Every week, I'll be updating this site with musical activity ideas and materials sorted by grade for all students. If there are any questions or comments for me, I'll be checking my mail regularly at smossberg@cpsd.us.

Kindergarten Activities For the Week of April 20, 2020

Hello Kindergarten families,

I hope everyone has had a wonderful break! In addition to our musical book and songs from last week, I'd like to add a bird echo song, "Oh Rick-a-Bamboo" into the mix. It's worth playing a few times so the kids can get used to echoing me. Also, if you scroll down past this video section I'd like you to take part in our virtual instrument collection project and weekly window bird hunt, described in the post and video below. See you soon!

Best,

Steve Mossberg

Virtual Instrument Collection Project Continues!

I’d like to invite everyone at every grade level to try a little (optional) musical experiment this week. I’ve noticed that all kinds of things in an apartment or house can be made into musical instruments with a little creativity. Each person that participates needs to find one object that can be “played” to make a sound. Blowing, tapping, rubbing, shaking -- all of these methods work. I’ve linked here to a collection sheet. If you return your observations to me at smossberg@cpsd.us. I’ll make a giant database of our new “instruments” and post it next week so we can all experiment further and try to make some house music! Thanks so much to everyone who has sent in their findings so far!

5th-grade percussionists -- This is a link to the song we’ve been rehearsing in class to play along with Mr. Sciarra’s band. You can play along directly on this site (hit play on “audio sample”). This is a link to the sheet music we’ve been reading. I challenge you to try playing every part!

Weekly window bird hunt! -- It's my favorite season, and just because we're stuck at home doesn't mean we can't look out the window for some of the most beautiful singers in the word: birds! This week we start with the songs of three common Cambridge birds, and we'll open up a new species to look for every week. In this video, I share the bird's song first and then an image of each one, so that students can make a mental connection to what they're hearing. Remember, the best birders know how to tell a bird by its song first!

New 3rd/4th Grade Song

Hi everbody! I'm excited to share the Irish folk song "The Water Is Wide" with you! It's a yearly tradition for me and my older students. Enjoy listening and singing along.
