Copyright law protects the owner of an original work against the unauthorized use of their work by others. The most common issue for students making media, however, is not so much protecting their work from use by someone else. It is determining whether they can use material produced by others in their publications, programs, and media projects.
There are several sources where students can find existing media that can be used. Some sources host media in the public domain and others host media that is published using a creative commons license. It’s always good to review the particular site you are looking at and the creative commons license that has been used.
Creative Works produced by the U.S. government belong to the public and are in the public domain.
