Course Description:
This course is structured as an introduction to a college level course about American Government. Students will be expected to engage with the rigorous demands of the course and use the resources that will be shared to provide students the support needed to learn the key concepts. There are five units we will study this semester:
Foundations of the American Democracy
Interactions among branches of government
Civil Liberties and Civil Rights
American Political ideologies and beliefs
Political Participation.
Students will also be required to read and analyze 15 assigned Supreme Court Cases and 9 foundational documents. The cases and readings are scattered throughout the curriculum. In addition, students will have the opportunity to self-select which civic engagement project they would like to do. By the end of the course, students will have a better idea of their political identity.
