Library with Mr. Kyer

Happy spring! We’ve been very busy in the library these past few months!

In March, we celebrated Read Across America Day with guest readers from the community and some wonderful activities organized by our amazing reading teachers. We also worked on the reading comprehension skills of gathering evidence and making predictions.

In April, we are celebrating National Poetry month. Students are learning about and reading poems by Shel Silverstein, Nikki Grimes and Lillian Moore. We will also be casting our votes for the winner of the Connecticut Nutmeg Book Award! The winner of this award will be announced in May.

Finally, as the school year draws to a close, we will be gearing up for summer reading! This year’s theme is “Find Your Voice”, and we’re looking forward to hearing more about it from Christa Kiedaisch, the Children's Librarian at Booth & Dimock Library. I’m confident that your children will be enthusiastic and inspired to read this summer!

Families can reinforce some of the skills we’ve been practicing in the library by asking questions such as:

Save The Date!!

The district wide art show is just around the corner, May 17th from 6:00-8:00 pm at the CNH/CHS Complex. This amazing exhibit is a collaboration featuring artwork created by our Coventry students. Our young artists have been working all school year to create beautiful masterpieces and are excited to have them displayed for the community. We are looking for parent volunteers to help assist with either the set up or break down of the show on May 17th and May 24th. You can contact me through email for more information.

MUSIC with Miss. Wong

Our musicians at CGS have been working hard developing their musicianship!

In Kindergarten we’ve been learning a variety of different chants and short songs. Ask your child to sing the Ghanian welcome song “Kye Kye Kule”! For a challenge you could ask your child to perform it fast versus slow.

In 1st grade, students are learning a variety of different musical games! Ask your child to sing “Closet Key”, “Lucy Locket” and “Charlie Over the Ocean”. You could even ask your child how to play these games!

In 2nd grade, students are preparing for their end of the year performances. You can practice with students by asking them to sing “This Land is Your Land” and asking them if they know the dance sequences to “The Noble Duke of York”.
