Coventry Grammar School

Dear CGS Families,

I hope you were able to enjoy the beautiful weather we were blessed with during the April vacation week. Students shared stories of fun play dates, enjoyable travels and time with family. They returned refreshed and ready for the final push of the 22-23 school year. With the mild winter and two remote snow days, Monday, June 12 is our last day of school. As always, it is an early release, 11:40am.

Thank you very much for making the time to attend our March student-led conferences. Your commitment resulted in a 95% participation rate. A true home-school partnership. Our combined efforts make the difference. We are so grateful for the amazing CGS students and families.

Kindergarten registration kicked off in April and is ongoing. Incoming Kindergarten Parent Information Night is Tuesday, May 9, 6-7pm. Each year we have updated and new information about programs, routines and procedures. It is relevant for newcomers and returning families. It is an opportunity for you to have your pressing questions answered, connect with other parents and learn about the various ways you can prepare your child for a successful transition to CGS. If you know of anyone with a kindergarten-aged child, turning 5 by January 1, 2024, please help spread the word about this event.

One of our goals this year was to increase the number of volunteers and expand the ways in which families and community members could contribute to and support our students and school. Well, you responded ten times over and we are thrilled. We have had parents as experts coming to classes to teach students about a hobby, profession or talent. Mystery readers, lunch time visitors and field trip chaperones have enhanced the school experience for all of our students. You will soon receive an invitation to attend the CGS Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday, June 1, 7:30-8:10am. Whether you prepared materials from home or walked the Nature Trail with your child’s class, all are invited. Your child/ren and our staff want to express our gratitude. Please mark your calendar and bring your appetite.

We are so appreciative of your support and collaboration throughout the year.  We look forward to spending the next several weeks rounding out the school year with continued growth and excitement.

Warmly,

Ronda Carrie

Proud Principal

Attendance

On a weekly basis, the school nurse, Mrs. Dunnack, school social worker, Mrs. Antil and Principal Carrie carefully review absences and late arrivals.  There are several reasons students are absent including illness, surgery, vacation, travel and quarantine among others.  These meetings are not to judge but rather inform and reflect on any patterns or discrepancies, and determine ways we can support families if at all possible to ensure their students are able to attend school.

To report school absences, please be sure to call or email the school on each day your child will be absent.  This can be done by simply contacting the school nurse directly, the front office, or your child’s teacher. In addition to date-specific information, we need to have a general reason (illness or not) to rule out COVID related absences.

A reminder that the school arrival time window is 8:10-8:30am.  Anyone who arrives after 8:30 is considered tardy.

When possible, please try to coordinate travel within the school scheduled “breaks”.  Although we are a grammar school, we do have significant academic rigor where learning is building throughout the year.
