PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Carle Place 7th-12th Grade Physical Education GUIDELINES

Proper Preparedness/Attire

  • All students will be provided with a lock and a locker in one of the locker rooms – lost locks will need to be paid for
  • Sweatpants/leggings/appropriate length shorts (cannot have zippers or buttons)
  • Tshirt/sweatshirt (cannot have zippers or buttons and no sleeveless shirts)
  • Sneakers with tied laces (no slides, sandals, boots, slippers, etc)
  • All of these must be worn to class every day!

  • It would also be a good idea to keep personal hygiene products in their lockers

Grading: Because physical education is a participation based course, students will be graded based on what their participation is, in addition to preparedness and behavior.

Students are graded on a daily basis on a scale of 0-5 points

5 – prepared and excellent participation

3 – prepared and satisfactory participation

1 – prepared and lack of participation

0– absent or unprepared

  • Students can receive 2 or a 4 if their efforts and/or behavior fall between the range.

Unprepareds - cannot be made up (student will receive a zero for the day)

Absences – students will receive a zero for the day if absent, however absences can be made up after school during extra help (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday ). Making up a class gives the student the opportunity to gain up to 5 points back to their grade.

Absence exceptions- students will not lose points the day/days absent for the following:

    • Medical note from a doctor (dentist, checkup, sick visit, etc)
    • Pass from the guidance office
    • Field trip

Medical Excuses (unable to participate in PE for any amount of days) – a medical note is required (mandated by the state) in order to be excused from physical education. The student will also need to complete an academic learning packet (if unable to participate in PE for an extended period of time) to fulfill their PE requirement while they are unable to actively participate in class. A medical note is also required to return to participation in physical education classes.

Students are given the opportunity to earn up to 5 points each class. Grades will be determined by adding these points together at the end of the marking period.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Because the interscholastic program is a direct outgrowth of the physical education program, any student-athlete excused from a physical education class for medical reasons may not participate in a practice, scrimmage, or contest on that same day. Note that Commissioner’s Regulations dictate that a student-athlete is ineligible if he or she is medically excused from participation in a physical education class.

No student-athlete may participate in a practice, scrimmage or contest on a day when the student was absent from school, unless a school administrator grants special permission for the absence. If late to school, students must sign in at the attendance office, and present a legal note by 8:30 am, in order to be eligible for any activity on that day.

I understand and agree to my/my child’s expectations for Physical Education.
