One of the Career Based Learning Employment Programs is Cyber Security. Belcan Global partners with CPS to teach students the world of cyber-security. While in high school students may earn a certification to begin an IT career immediately upon graduation!
Grades 7-12 research and share the different pathways they may take towards their future. They choose to study the different CPS high school options, the many different Career Tech and Career Based Learning opportunities within the district, or one of the three post-secondary options; employed- beginning a career immediately upon graduation, enrolled- continuing education through a college, university, apprenticeship, trade school, or vocational program, and enlisted- joining one of the branches of the armed forces. They then create a door decoration to share that information with the rest of the school.
The Career Expo is one of the Career Based Learning events for 11th graders in the district. Students practice their soft skills with over 50 local businesses who volunteer two days to work with our students and share their journeys to where they are today, network with the students, and expose students to new careers in all 16 nationally recognized career clusters.
Favorite quote, "Wow. I didn't even know this career existed"!
3rd Graders learn about and practice the character strengths of zest, humor, perseverance, and fairness.
As part of the Career Based Learning program, students in 8th grade and 11th grade get the opportunity to job shadow with local businesses. Students have experienced behind-the-scenes looks at Children's Hospital, Fidelity, Cincinnati Visitor's Bureau, Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, Cincinnati Metro, Messer Construction, CVG Airport, Dinsmore & Shohl and many more!
These pictures show some of the students who had an amazing day learning about the skilled trades with Monti Inc. One student was so interested he decided he was going to become employed upon graduation at Monti (and was told to contact them as soon as he did graduate)!
In Advisory students in 8th grade research, use their strengths of creativity, and the soft skill of teamwork to educate their peers about the dangers of using drugs.
Breathing and relaxation techniques are the protocol at the beginning of each Advisory lesson. Students are taught the science of how their brains work and mindfulness strategies allowing the student to have better control over their behavior and emotions. Each quarter, Advisory students learn a new strategy and continue to practice it throughout the quarter
Every quarter during midterm week, students check grades, set goals, and assess their progress towards graduation. Students participate in individual conferences with their Advisory teacher and calculate their GPAs.
Monitoring their progress helps all students realize their post-secondary plans!
Students use a variety of tools to learn about possible careers. Here you see a student completing the Multiple Intelligences survey to find out what his preferred intelligence is. Turns out his is mathematical and is in the company of Albert Einstein! At this point he is thinking of being enrolled and becoming an engineer.
During 4th quarter all students reflect on what they learned and create a presentation in the style of their choice. It brings all of the information they learned about themselves over the year through Advisory together, so they can make informed decisions about their futures when they decide what is right for them; employed, enlisted, or enrolled!
These 7th and 8th grade examples include which high school the students plans to attend, what post-secondary pathways they are thinking about choosing, what careers they may be interested in, their top learning styles, hobbies and more!
A 5th grade classroom brings the Advisory pieces together: post-secondary planning (career connections), the Advisory goals poster, and the character strengths students use to strengthen their Social Emotional Learning and community building!
Notice the white pieces of paper student to the character strengths poster. These show which strengths are the students top ones!
CPS has partners with local businesses in the fields of Logistics, Manufacturing, Public Safety, Hospitality & Tourism, and Information Technology to offer students employment experiences in the community. CBL staff assist students in making their applications, preparing for their initial interviews, and continues to support them while they train and begin employment in the 11th and 12th grade years.
11th and 12th grade students have the opportunity to practice their interview skills through a partnership with the Business Advisory Council and CBL. Volunteers from the business community interview students as if they were real candidates and provide resume feedback. Students get to practice the soft skills they learn during their Advisory lessons in a real life situation!
Students in 4th grade explore the options for life after high school; employed in a career, enrolled in post-secondary education, or enlisted in a branch of the military. At the end of the lesson they chart what they think will be their post-secondary pathway.
Students in 8th grade explore what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean to them. Here you see students creating a word cloud and others making a definition 4-square drawing to illustrate their learning!
