Interested in joining Taft High School Varsity Poms team?
If you plan to try-out for any sports at Taft High School you must be registered at our 8to18 website: TRY OUT REGISTRATION LINK
Thank you for your interest in trying out for the THS Varsity Poms team. The following is designed to help answer any questions regarding the program. It is crucial that both students and their parents carefully read over this entire section and understand the commitment that is required to be part of the THS Varsity Poms program. Please direct any questions you may have to the THS Varsity Poms Coaching Staff.
Please be sure to have an updated IHSA Physical Examination completed prior to tryout. Below is a IHSA Physical Examination form:
The THS Varsity Poms program will only hold one virtual try-outs for the 2020-2021 school year.
Athletes will be evaluated on dance technique, skill level, athleticism, performance and dance routines learned during the clinical. Everyone will be given an equal opportunity to make the varsity poms team at THS. Students may be asked questions regarding academic time commitment, dedication, and overall interest in the team. Academic performance is highly considered during try outs as well as the candidate’s attitude and work ethic.
Because of the level of execution required for tryouts, any medical conditions (i.e. injuries, asthma, diabetes, etc.) must be disclosed to the coach at the beginning of the clinic. The coach will do everything possible to accommodate any special needs. All athletes must have a current physical on file to participate in tryouts. It is required that returning athletes renew their physicals at this time. There are NO EXCEPTIONS!!
As a tool to see how potential team members dance together, the Taft High School Poms coaching staff is requiring a dress code and must be followed in order to tryout.
Please come to school with appropriate dance attire: shirt that will cover mid-drift, shorts/leggings or yoga pants.
Shorts must cover backside and “booty” shorts are permitted with tights underneath.
Dance shoes or athletic shoes must be worn at all times. No dancing socks!!
All hair must be pulled back in a ponytail or neat bun.
NO GUM, JEWELRY, FOOD, or CELL PHONES!
As a representatives of their school, dancers are expected to serve as examples for others at all times, whether in or out of uniform. They must observe the follow:
No drinking of alcoholic beverages.
No illegal use of drugs.
No smoking.
No use of profane language.
No obnoxious or derogatory conduct.
Travel to and from performances will be designated by the coach and Athletic Director. Dancers will always travel to competition with the team. Usually dancers will travel from competition and performances with the team as well, but exceptions may be made ahead of time by written agreement only.
Dancers are responsible for the appropriate care of their uniforms, costumes, and poms. If uniforms, costumes or poms are lost during the year, the dancer will be responsible for the cost of replacing them.
Dancers must wear the chosen outfit during school, for performances and/or competitions. Choosing not to have the correct outfit means choosing not to perform. This includes what they wear when they travel as a group.
Any conflicts that arise between members of the group should be kept within the team and settled immediately. It is counterproductive to discuss group problems outside the team. STAY POSITIVE!
Dancers must attend all practices the week of competition/performance in order to perform at that competition or game. They must attend all classes before regular performances and all classes on the day of an event in order to perform at a regular game performance.
Dancers on the team will only be able to do a Spring sport if they do not conflict with the dancers’ ability to participate fully in dance. Clubs are allowed to join as long as it is not conflicting to practices and performances.
Dancers may not miss practice for any reason other than a family emergency, or pre planned appointment. I must receive at least two weeks’ notice of any schedule appointments but you can schedule any appoints on non-practice days. Any e-mails or texts from a team memer before practice will count as an unexcused absence. When one member of the team is missing a practice cannot be fully productive.
