Best Practice for Parents and Families
• Assess your present emotions - So many times we continue with business as usually; however, we are living in unexpected times. It is important to acknowledge honestly how you are feeling with your children. By doing so, you allow your child to feel comfortable and could potentially be lessening their anxiety. Also, this provides your child with the opportunity of communicating other concerns to you down the line.
• Provide reassurance- During this time your child, along with yourself can go through a range of emotions. It is important that you reassure your child that things will be okay. Be honest about what is taking place at home through explanation and answering your child’s questions. If possible do check-ins on a continuum, to ensure that you are monitoring and assisting with your child’s emotions.
• Establish routines- Having your child at home, adjusting to doing work with your child at home is all a new sense of normal. It is important to set and practice consistent routines. For many of our children changes in routine lead to unexpected behaviors. The more you can provide structure (e.g. schedule) the better your child will be able to adapt to this change. Being consistent helps to develop and nurture safe habits that reduce stress and anxiety.
• Allow for social connection- Our students need social bonding as we all do, however, with stay at home orders that can become quite difficult. It is important to reach out to others and not isolate ourselves. Staying in connection with your child’s school for updates or community agencies can help support with your additional needs. One way we all remain connected is through social media. CPS has Google hangouts for students to connect with teachers, counselors, and other support staff. Your child may use platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and others so be sure to mind all activity. With these platforms becoming increasingly important please have conversations about online safety. Talk with your child about appropriate online content and privacy settings.
