About the Department

Welcome to the Whitney M. Young Social Science page.  Our department collaborates as a team to bring the best teaching practices and research-based strategies to our students.  Within our content-area classes, we focus on skill building with an emphasis on reading, writing, speaking, and listening, while aligning our curriculum to the Illinois Social Science Standards, Social Science Common Core State Standards, and/or College Board AP standards.

While creating classrooms full of rigorous instruction, Social Science teachers also strive to incorporate the student-centered Whitney M. Young Pillars and Social Emotional Learning into our classes and school community.

In Social Science classes at WY, students should expect to engage in whole-class discussions, small group discussions, collaboration with peers, authentic assessments, simulations, and project-based learning.
