Our History

Ruben Salazar opened its doors in 1971 with a federal proposal written with the effort of parents, teachers and community members. Salazar has always been committed to bilingual education and parent involvement. The main goal reflected in the original proposal was to address the needs of the non-English speaking preschool child. Since 1971, Salazar has undergone many changes. What was once a not for profit organization became a primary center which, in 1990, selected its own principal. The school has gone from an early childhood program to a primary Dual Language center. In 1993, it became a Pre-kindergarten to sixth grade, an expansion possible only after moving to the current site. Then, in 1996, Salazar officially had its first class graduate from eighth grade.

Namesake: Ruben Salazar

Rubén Salazar (March 3, 1928 - August 29, 1970) was a journalist and civil rights activist, who was the first Mexican-American from mainstream media to cover the Chicago community. Although he was killed over 40 years ago by an LA Sheriff during the National Chicano Moratorium March against the Vietnam War, he remains remembered as a Champion of Chicano Rights.

Our Mission

Our school is dedicated to creating a nurturing learning environment that meets the diverse needs of all students. We actively engage with culture, language, and diversity to foster an inclusive atmosphere. Our rigorous programs, encompassing both Dual Language and Bilingual models, are designed to develop students' academic language skills in both English and Spanish. We believe in the power of partnership and social justice, involving all school personnel, parents, and members of the wider community in continuous learning and collaboration. Together, we strive to promote growth, understanding, and excellence for every learner.

Nuestra escuela está dedicada a crear un ambiente de aprendizaje acogedor que responde a las diversas necesidades de todos los estudiantes. Nos comprometemos activamente con la cultura, el idioma y la diversidad para fomentar un ambiente inclusivo. Nuestros rigurosos programas, que abarcan tanto los modelos de Lenguaje Dual (Dual Language) como los Bilingües, están diseñados para desarrollar las habilidades del lenguaje académico de los estudiantes tanto en inglés como en español. Creemos en el poder de la colaboración, la justicia social e involucramos a todo el personal escolar, padres y miembros de la comunidad en un aprendizaje y colaboración continua. Juntos, nos esforzamos por promover el crecimiento, la comprensión y la excelencia para cada estudiante.

We will provide a rigorous, culturally responsive education that fosters academic excellence, bilingualism, and a strong sense of identity. Through collaboration with our community, we will create a nurturing environment that prepares our students to succeed.
