Learning About the Writing Process! 10/3/18

Fifth grade students reviewed the steps of the writing process by completing an organizational activity with their tablemates. Students were given a bag of puzzle pieces about the steps of the writing process, what each step entails, and "tips for the writer" for each step. Students did a great job of analyzing each piece, and putting the puzzle together accurately. Students will be using the writing process to complete a variety of pieces throughout the year that they will put in their personal writing portfolios!

Using the Writing Process to Produce a Tall Tale! 10/18/18

Fifth grade students will publish their final drafts of tall tales this week. What makes a tall tale? Well, you need a protagonist with a super power, or exaggerated characteristic, a real setting, and a light-hearted ending. Tall tales were originally created and told for pioneers who were facing new and overwhelming challenges. By telling stories of characters with superhuman powers, the pioneers felt more confident to take on their new challenges. Students have been completing the writing process in order to publish their tall tales tomorrow. Take a look at some of our students in action: prewriting, drafting, peer revising, editing, and publishing on the Chromebooks.

The top 5 competitors will recieve 2 bonus points on their test on Monday.

Happy Halloween from 5th Grade!

Using Study Strategies to Learn Vocabulary! 11/13/18

Our students are getting into complex vocabulary from our historical fiction novel, Riding Freedom. It's important for our students to not only remember the meanings of these words, but to learn how to navigate new complex words when they are reading on their own. Students have been practicing a variety of study skills, as well as some fun review games, to tackle these new words.

Staying Organized in Quarter 2! 11/16/18

During our intervention period, students did a great job of reorganizing and tidying up their binders. Our students bring their Case-its to every class, and it's easy to want to shove papers in any old folder, or to write notes in any old notebook. To stay organized, our students spent some time thoughtfully rearranging their binders in ways that functioned best for them.
