About Me
I am a Chicago-native, and as a product of a low-income family I learned quickly that education was going to play a big part in my life. I attended Marshall Metropolitan High School, and went on to graduate from Northwestern College and Governors State University.
My work experience includes 10 years of admissions recruitment in higher education which allowed me to work directly with high school juniors and seniors, assisting with their college enrollment process. In addition, I also worked in non-profit assisting youth with developing skills necessary to gain employment, become a part of the “working world’, and help them overcome employment barriers. For most of my career I have been known as the "Financial Aid Guru" due to my work as a financial aid program director for many years, where I worked closely with high school students and their families; helping them to gain financial stability and understanding of the financial aid process as a whole.
At Carver, I am the girls varsity volleyball coach, I have three children of my own, love to read, and I treat my students as if they were my own--always keeping their best interests in mind!
I am so excited to announce this month's winner for Counselor or Coach of the Month. December’s Coach of the Month is Keisha Heard of Carver Military! As of 12/2/2020, 89% of Carver’s 111 seniors have completed 3+ College Applications and 63% have Applied to at least one Match School. This is more than 50% above the district average! Although there is a ton to celebrate about Keisha’s work as a Coach I want to call out her use of social media, specifically a Facebook Group, the “Carver Military Challengers” to promote postsecondary actions for all students and families during remote times! --Executive Director, Heidi Truax

Students use their CPS email address and password to log in to their account in Naviance. Parents can speak to their student's counselor about gaining access to Naviance to view their student's college and career information and support their student in making good decisions. Click the image above to gain access to your account.
Each student’s path is unique. Students at Chicago Public Schools use the free Naviance software tool to start to figure out their interests and to get some ideas about possible options for life beyond high school.
Specifically for college planning, students use Naviance to research colleges of interest and determine schools that are the best fit for their personal and career goals, academic performance, and college entrance exam results from the SAT and/or ACT.
