The primary mission of our project is to change the perception of immigrants in America. Thus, we collected data to try to gauge people's perception of immigrants in America. From here, we can begin to figure out our target audience and how we can reach out to them to begin to effect positive change and shift the narrative often told about immigrants. Our research is ongoing, so if you would like to provide your input, please complete our survey at the following link: Immigration Attitudes Survey
National Trends: Prior to conducting our data collection, we consulted the national trends and Gallup and Pew Research. The infographics below reflect their most recent findings.
Survey Demographics: This survey was completed through Google forms and was shared across Facebook. In total, we received 120 responses. Based on the sample received, the data is skewed to reflect people aged 18-25 who self-identify as Liberal or Very Liberal. Key demographics include political ideology, age, and immigration status and/or relation to immigrants.
Attitudes Toward Immigrants: In our data collection, we found our skewed responses were particularly representative of left-leaning segments of the population; many national polls conducted regarding immigration attitudes by Gallup, Pew Research Center, and the Public Religion Research Institute found Democrats or Liberals viewed immigration favorably. The majorities in the charts below largely reflect those who self-identify as liberal.
Conservative Attitudes Toward Immigrants: Although we did not received a large number of responses from those who self-identify as Conservative, those who did complete the survey responded in a way that reflects national trends. The data below is strictly from those who self-identified as Conservative; their responses mirror those gathered by Gallup, Pew, and PRRI.
Notably, these findings also correlated with a lower frequency of interaction with immigrants. Additionally, in comparison to other partisan groups, a smaller percentage of Conservatives identified as immigrants or as having family members who are immigrants.
