Background Of Chicago/Edgewater Immigration: In the beginning The family of John Faber came to America from Luxembourg in a ship. He and his family settled into what is now Edgewater, purchasing original land in 1848. Since then, him and many other immigrants have shaped our community into what it is today. Edgewater is known to be an easy access for ethnic groups. You can find immigrants everywhere. The percentage of foreign-born in the Edgewater has remained consistently high from 1860-2010. In the 1930s and ‘60s, the neighborhood was packed with Europeans. Gradually, many people of European descent moved out and people of Latin, African, and Asian backgrounds began to call Edgewater home.
