Standard 8: Collaborative Relationships – The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Artifact Description: My cooperating teacher and I used this template for our newsletters that would inform parents of the learning focuses per subject, vocabulary words, daily heart words, upcoming events, word list, and suggestions for practice at home. Newsletters were sent home weekly in both English and Spanish.
IPTS Connection: This letter connects with the eighth IPTS and performance indicator “uses digital tools and resources to promote collaborative interactions” (8M). Google Slides was used to update templates for weekly newsletters. Newsletters were sent home as communication with parents or guardians on their child’s weekly academic updates and extracurricular activities after school. Newsletters are a great way to inform parents or guardians of what is happening in the classroom.
What I learned: Creating weekly newsletters help build a structure and routine within the classroom. I’ve learned that weekly newsletters engage families and students as they look forward to receiving the updates of the new material being covered and important events happening.
Artifact Description: During summer semester 2022 in Methods and Materials for Teaching Bilingual Students (EDUC342), I created this Linguistic, Cultural, and Academic Survey.
IPTS Connection: This survey connects with the eighth IPTS and performance indicator “establishes respectful and productive relationships with parents or guardians and seeks to develop cooperative partnerships to promote student learning and well-being” (8Q). I created this survey as an example of how I would further connect with students, their family, and expanded my knowledge on diversity within the classroom.
What I learned: Creating this survey made me think more outside the box and feel more proactive as an educator. Creating questions to this survey made me consider what is most ideal for parents and students to answer as it forms a more well rounded, foundational relationship between each student, their family and the teacher.
