Artist Statement
Vandalism. An action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property. But does “destroying” your own art count as vandalism? I wanted to play with this idea and was inspired by Banksy’s famous piece, “Girl with Balloon”; the artwork slid out of its frame and ripped to shreds after it was sold for auction.
I used the same red, black, and white color scheme used in “Girl with Balloon” and added my own touch to it. I first created a blank white isometric room and added some pieces like the vase, a wall, and a poster. Here’s where the self vandalism came in, using a black Sharpie, I scribbled over the room, adding eyes, puddles, and cranes. Using a red paint marker, I drew large cracks in the wall, and went over the poster. The hole in the wall represented that art isn’t only one thing. The bent strips of paper show how art can be flexible and anything you want it to be. And the hatch on the floor of the space represents what was hidden underneath.
