Allow choice. Letting your child choose an independent reading book gives them permission to enjoy reading! Make a day out of going to the library or book store. If your child is a reluctant reader, think about what type of TV shows or movies he or she likes to watch. Find a book in that genre!

Model reading. Let your child see you reading for pleasure often. Better yet, put the cell phones and laptops away, and make a ritual out of family reading time. Why not start a Family Book Club and take turns choosing books to read? Talk about the books you read with one another.
Embrace audiobooks. Audiobooks require listeners to use the same comprehension strategies we work on in class (inferring, predicting, visualizing, asking questions, evaluating), and they are tools to help increase attention and focus in students.
Create a reading space. It should be free from distractions, comfortable,and calming. Establish a set time every day when your child will be able to read uninterrupted. Be sure to remove cell phones and other temptations.
