Making the Most of Online Learning!
Murray Language Academy 3rd-4th Grades
Just like students prepare to come to school, it’s important to prepare for our online meetings.
Get Ready for the Day - Get up, get dressed, and eat breakfast with time to spare before school begins.
Prepare Materials – Gather the needed materials for each lesson and have them ready to go: pencil, notebook, books, manipulatives, etc. Think about keeping a bin/box of all your materials in the learning space.
Learning Position – Students who are sitting at a table seem to be the most comfortable and focused throughout the lesson. It’s important to be able to reach to turn on the microphone or be able to write down notes/responses during the online lesson. When sitting on a bed or couch, it’s hard to balance all of these materials with ease. If seeking a quiet place in a bedroom and there is no table available, think about setting up boxes to place the electronic device and then sit on the floor with hands free to write and access the computer.
Camera and Microphone - keep the camera on throughout the lesson so the teacher can monitor understanding and see hand signals like: thumbs-up to agree, raise hand to ask a question, etc. Please turn-off the microphone until asked to turn it on.
CPS Remote Learning Privacy Policy: “Out of respect for the privacy of our fellow classmates and teachers, please do not record or photograph the lesson to use for any purpose.” Cell phones are not to be used during online lessons.
Works best when used in the Google Chrome browser (as opposed to Safari, Internet Explorer, etc). If you do not have that browser on your computer, we recommend downloading it.
Trouble Accessing Files? Log out of all Gmail accounts and then with the CPS account only. When multiple accounts are open, there is miscommunication between the accounts and then the files do not work. When using an iPad, there are multiple steps required to log out so be sure to go through all of them☺.
In the assignment directions, there are often troubleshooting notes, reminders of passwords, and strategies for completing the assignment. Please remember to read the directions carefully.
This short video shows students and parents how to view assigned work and determine if it is:
Assigned and needs to be completed

If you find it’s taking your child a long time to complete assignments, check-in to see if there are things distracting him/her like visiting other websites, playing games, chatting with friends via email, etc. In the classroom, we use timers to help students chunk and manage their time. This might be a good tool to use at home as well. Since we are not traveling to and from school, it may feel like we have an abundance of time in our day. However, sometimes we are less efficient when it seems like there is endless time to complete something.
