Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world divided into four kingdoms, each one connected to an element, where certain people, known as benders, can manipulate an element. The story follows Aang, a 12-year-old airbender who learns he is the next Avatar. He is destined to restore harmony to the war-torn world. Accompanied by waterbender Katara and her brother Sokka, Aang embarks on a journey to master all four elements and hinder the Fire Nation's plans for world domination.

Netflix's adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is supposed to capture the essence of the beloved animated series but it has problems in pacing and adaptation choices. It is true to many aspects of the original like character dynamics and plot, however, it doesn’t convey the same depth and humor. Also, the Netflix adaptation is criticized for its visual effects, with CGI backgrounds and action sequences, which were less than what fans expected.

However, the adaptation has great casting choices especially among the villains, who bring complexity to their roles. The portrayal of some main characters, such as Aang and Katara, may feel lacking compared to their animated versions. While acknowledging the original series, the adaptation doesn’t surpass the quality of the animated version of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The journey of Aang and his friends shows themes of friendship and courage. While the adaptation falls short of the animated series, it just proves the timeless appeal of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its ability to captivate audiences with its elegantly imagined world and compelling characters.

Mean Girls was officially released into theaters on January 12, 2024. Mean Girls was put on Paramount + on March 2, 2024. This movie was a remake of the original Mean Girls film, starring Lindsay Lohan. In this remake, songs from the Broadway musical of Mean Girls are included and edited to fit into the movie. Mean Girls is a new musical comedy that everyone is loving.

The mood of this movie is very happy and playful. This movie promotes women to stop comparing themselves to others and to start seeing themselves as how beautiful they really are. This movie also has a hint of comedy in it and many easter eggs that reference the original movie.

Manohla Dargis from The New York Times claims, "Though, as the 20 years between the first movie and this one have reminded us — and as legions of nice and putatively nasty women have proven time and again — the world loves mean girls and women until it doesn’t, and then it hates them with vengeance.”

The main characters in this film are played by many known actors and actresses. Reneé Rapp plays Regina George, Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron, Avantika plays Karen Shetty, Christopher Briney plays Aaron Samuels, Bebe Wood plays Gretchen Wieners, Jaquel Spivey plays Damian Hubbard, and Auli’i Cravalho plays Janis Sarkisian.

Overall, the star-studded cast and directors clashed the original movie and broadway songs together into a masterpiece. If you were a fan of the original movie Mean Girls, then this should be a must-watch on your list.

Sunday Trips to Foxtail

Sometimes on Sunday before church, my friends and I go to Foxtail Coffee Co.--this cute coffee shop in Peachtree City (and also in Newnan). If you’re ever in the mood to treat yourself to nice coffee and tea, I recommend going here. I personally like their matcha latte with lavender bitters just because the flavors compliment each other, but if you aren’t a matcha or tea person in general, maybe their Cafe Con Leche might be up your alley.

The environment in both locations is nice and calming, so it makes for a perfect study spot for you and your friends if you’re looking for a new study spot. If you ever decide to go, I hope you enjoy the place as much as I do!

Cafe du Monde

During Christmas break, I went to New Orleans with my family and explored the city as it was my first visit there.

On the second day, we decided to take a bus tour of the city to learn more about the history of New Orleans and how it came to be. When the first half of our tour ended, we stopped near a Cafe Du Monde for a bathroom break and our tour guide encouraged us to try out the beignets and coffee from the already-packed cafe. Unfortunately, since the line was so long, we weren’t able to try their famous beignets before we left for our second part of the tour. Luckily, we did manage to find another Cafe Du Monde near our hotel, so we eagerly called an Uber over and made our way to the popular spot. I think that was my first time having beignets, and maybe it was because we got there around eleven at night after a long day, but I remember stuffing the piping hot pastry into my mouth like it was my last meal. I liked it a lot! It wasn’t too sweet and while the powdered sugar got everywhere, I thought it was a nice treat to have at the end of the day.

Overall, Cafe Du Monde is a fun tourist spot to visit and I definitely think that everyone should at least make one trip there while they’re visiting New Orleans, Louisiana.

This movie is a reminder that the human population has started to rely too heavily on technology in our everyday lives. This movie also touches on the topics of racism and inequality.

The mood of Leave the World Behind is tense and depressing. Audience members will most likely be sitting on the edges of their seats while the movie rolls.

The plot of this movie is that a family vacations to Long Island where they rented an expensive vacation house. While they are there, two strangers interrupt their night and tell them that there has been a blackout. At first, the family has to try and decide if they believe that the strangers are telling the truth all while touching on the idea that their race might be a factor in their decision.

The threat of the blackout and the cause of it continued to grow. Both of the families must decide how to best survive and cope with the potential crisis. While this is all going on, they also have to grapple with their place in the world. Both of the families know that there is no going back to how things used to be in their simple world.

Frank Williams from Reel Reviews describes the movie by saying, ”Doesn’t just offer disheartening disaster sequences, it is also a thought-provoking journey into the complexities of our contemporary existence; the type of film we don’t get enough of these days.”

The main characters in this movie are played by Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke. The strangers are played by Myha’la Herrold and Mahershala Ali. The cast of stars in this movie really helped bring the movie together into a masterpiece.

Overall, Leave the World Behind is a must-watch on Netflix. Audiences will most likely love the suspense and tension that this movie includes. Everyone needs to add this movie to their watch list.

The plot of the sequel is similar to hits like Mission Impossible and James Bond. The themes of teamwork and determination resonate throughout this movie and its predecessor, creating an enjoyable experience for people of all ages. Interactions between familiar and new characters add excitement and fun.

Wonka was released in the USA on December 15, 2023 primarily in theaters. The movie stars Timothée Chalamet as Wonka. This movie is a prequel to the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was released in 2005.

Many people weren’t sure how anyone could play Wonka as well as Johnny Depp or Gene Wilder, but Timothée Chalamet pulled the role off perfectly. In this imaginative two-hour musical comedy, viewers explore what events lead up to Willy Wonka becoming the Willy Wonka we all know and love.

The main plot of this movie is that a young Wonka, who is full of whimsical dreams, tries to change the world’s view of chocolate by offering them his different take on the delectable treat. He makes many friends and enemies along the way and overcomes all of his problems with just his hope and chocolate.

Matt Zoller Seitz from Roger Ebert claims, “The performances, costumes, songs, and choreography are probably better than they needed to be to make a hit of this project, which is, as executives like to put it, a pre-sold property.”

This movie is a thrilling sci-fi horror tale that has a whole different take on home invasions. Throughout the whole movie, you’re guaranteed to be biting your nails.

One cool thing about this movie is that it has almost no dialogue. Throughout the whole running time of the movie, you will only hear five words. Many people have claimed this to be a really nice detail because it allows people to speculate the surroundings and what is going on.

This movie features Kaitlyn Dever playing a girl named Brynn. No one in the town liked Brynn because when she was younger, she accidentally threw a rock at the police chief’s daughter and killed her. Brynn lives a simple and solidarity lifestyle. She likes to stay inside her country home most of the time.

One night, Brynn is awakened by strange noises coming from her house. She gets up and walks around to find that aliens have invaded her home. She has to figure out how to survive these unearthly creatures and get help. Throughout the story there are many twists and turns. In the end, everyone likes her again but to know how that happens, readers will have to watch the movie.

This movie is rated PG-13 for its violent content and terror.

“She can monologue with her eyes,” the film’s director claimed about Kaitlyn Dever. Since there was no dialogue throughout the movie, Kaitlyn had to show fear through her eyes and body. Everyone said that she did a great job at it, and it just shows how talented she is.

Overall, No One Will Save You is an awesome horror movie that gets its message across in very few words. This movie is currently available on Hulu for streaming. People must watch this cat-and-mouse chase thriller.

While the adaptation is inspired by various Poe works, the challenge lies in the execution of these references. The attempts to include elements of Poe can feel strained at times, resulting in a tone that doesn’t always stay consistent. Flanagan’s liking for a mix-and-match approach to Poe’s themes creates a story that falls short of the profound, mysterious essence of Poe’s original works.

The series is a sort of Poe Cinematic Universe, exploring interconnected nods to his stories. However these references, placed as Easter eggs, sometimes don’t integrate into the entire story. The Faustian undertones that are the reason for the characters’ fates lack the lingering mysteries and dreamlike logic of Poe’s storytelling.

Exploring the Faustian elements further, the series involves characters that pursue power and make questionable deals, like Faustian stories. Throughout the movie, many people are guaranteed to be on the edge of their seats and jumping at every jumpscare. The movie is relatable in a way because many people have experienced the fear of having a monster under their bed. They may remember having their parents check under their bed or in their closet to make sure that there are no monsters hiding.

The main characters in this movie are Sadie Harper and her younger sister, Sawyer. They have recently lost their mom and are still grieving over the loss. Their dad, Will, is a therapist, and he is also dealing with his own grief which leads him to not be able to help with his daughters’ grief.

One day, a man shows up at Will’s door and asks for a therapy session. Will accepts but that only leads to a suicide occurring in a closet, and a malevolent spirit haunting over their family and torturing them. Now, the family must figure out how they can get rid of this entity and survive at the same time.

The central villain, also known as the Boogeyman in this movie, is a metaphor of emotional trauma. The Boogeyman attaches to families who are experiencing grief and loss.

Overall, The Boogeyman is an entertaining horror film that features a surprise ending. The whole film will keep you transfixed on the screen and wondering what will happen next. For example, one of the contestants is a doctor and fluent in both English, Korean, and Spanish. Another is a lawyer, who’s also from MIT. There are also many more talented individuals to complete the lineup. The basis of the show lies in various games that the contestants play to earn an object called "pieces." Pieces are the currency of the show, and if a player runs out of pieces, they’re eliminated.

There are two types of matches. There’s the main match that allows players to earn more pieces, and the other is the prize match that allows players to add more money to the total prize pot. The stakes are high for both games, because the player could either lose pieces or get eliminated in the main match. Additionally, fail to increase the total prize money in the prize match. But there’s so much more to the show, as there are secrets laid out for the contestants to discover to earn an even bigger prize. Adam Sandler took on the role as the father figure with Idina Menzel as his wife. His daughters played his daughters in the movie, and his wife played the mom of Lydia.

The main character starring in this movie is Stacy. Stacy is a Jewish teenager who is going through junior high in a Hebrew school. Stacy’s best friend is Lydia. Both Lydia and Stacy want to have their dream bat mitzvahs.

However, the two best friends end up going against each other after they both fall for the same boy. Embarrassing secrets are shared, friends break each other’s rules, new friendships are formed, and huge, colorful bat mitzvahs are thrown in this coming of age comedy.

“This joyride to adulthood is a real-life family affair,” Teo Bugbee for The Daily Beast claimed.

All teenagers who are in high school or middle school should watch this movie because they can relate to it on many levels. This movie has a straight-forward plot that is very easy to follow.

Marvel fans are shocked at the strangely somber tone and plot that is featured in the newest Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This movie is the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

Marvel fans have had mixed feelings about the unusual plot presented in the film. Some fans say that it wasn’t as funny as the other installments in the trilogy, and that they don’t recommend it for younger viewers. While others say that it is an unexpected masterpiece of a movie with a new kind of story that Marvel hasn’t presented yet.

Many viewers got their heart strings pulled by the emotional message and presence felt during the film.

“If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a mixtape, it’s the one that your ex sends you after you break up with him, full of syrupy, sentimental tunes meant to reignite any last lingering sparks of feeling you may have once shared.” Glen Weldon from NPR states.

The Glory is a thriller series available on Netflix with two seasons. It tells the story of Moon Dong-eun, a 17-year-old girl who was being bullied by a notorious group of rich students in her school. Consequently, she dropped out of the school to escape the abuse, and years later, as an adult she exacts her revenge on the same people who ruined her life.

The story centers around Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo), Lee Do-hyun (Joo Yeo-jeong) a doctor she met who later becomes an important ally, Lim Ji-yeon (Park Yeon-jin) one of the main villains of the show, and the rest of the group who bullied her as well. The show uses the plot to place a spotlight on the issue of bullying, which coincidentally happens to be a huge problem in South Korea. Additionally, issues like sexual harassment and corruption in the school environment are addressed as well. If you’re looking for a show about revenge, societal issues, and a satisfying ending of justice being served in a less conventional way, The Glory might just be the show for you. And fun fact, the show is based on a true story.

Pink, glitter, and all things fabulous-- the latest Barbie movie is a perfect mixture of all three components. With a star-studded cast including Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the film is an absolute extravaganza.

The movie starts by portraying Barbie in her perfect, plasticky paradise. She follows the same routine every day, sticking to it without fail. Wake up, shout “Hi Barbie!” to all the other Barbies of the city, eat breakfast (or lack thereof), float down to a bubblegum pink convertible, hang out with the Kens, have a few dance parties here and there, sleep, repeat. The sun rises, the sun falls. Barbie Land continues on.

However, this perfect Barbie Land changes when inexplicable thoughts of death cross Barbie’s mind. The perfect arches of her feet fall flat. Troubled, she goes out into the real world to try to find the root of her problem. The introduction of the real world shows that there is more to Barbie than meets the eye. The world of shiny plastic, flawless makeup, and bubbly musical numbers makes it easy to mistake this movie for yet another colorful escapade. However, beneath the layers of pink and glitter, Barbie actually tells the story of what being a woman really is. It is a touching tale of girl empowerment, a message that resonates deeply in today's world. Barbie is the embodiment of every young girl navigating her way in a world that often underestimates her.

This movie shows how Barbie, and other girls in general, are not defined by their appearance or so-called “girly” charm. The importance of women leaning on women is underlined several times in this movie, emphasizing that the real power is in mutual empowerment and unity. Barbie also touches base on the extreme societal expectations of women, as compared to those of men. America Ferrera, who plays a Mattel employee named Gloria, makes an inspiring speech that pulls on the heartstrings of everyone in the cinema. She tells Barbie, "It is literally impossible to be a woman…[y]ou are so beautiful and so smart…[l]ike, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.” The feminist tones in this movie really show how women must work on building each other up. Barbie emphasizes that every girl, regardless of her background or aspirations, has a unique voice that deserves to be heard.

Barbie isn’t just another girly movie about a doll; it’s a celebration of womanhood, a timeless feminist story, a powerful ode to every girl and woman. Beyond the glitter and shine, a heartwarming message resonates.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil was going downhill and needed a game to fix their franchise and fast. Resident Evil 6 was received poorly from fans all over the world for not keeping with the horror genre that it originally was. The game also did not meet the company's expectations for sales.

The company then announced the development of Resident Evil 7 in February 2014, in which the video game would go back to the roots of the original series. One major change of the game is the development software they used to make the game, which is called RE Engine. RE Engine was the main focus for this game and took the company two years to build the software. The next major change is the game is in first-person instead of the usual third-person; the developers made this change for the support of virtual reality. The game then released on January 24, 2017, and fans around the world loved the game, which revived the dying state of the franchise, selling over 10 million units. Resident Evil 7 received a score of 86 on Metacritic, 9/10 on Polygon, and 8/10 on GameSpot.

Ethan Winters receives a video message from his missing wife, Mia Winters, where she tells him to help her. Ethan visits an abandoned guest house where he finds Mia, but she is asking why he’s here because she never contacted him. Mia then grabs a chainsaw and starts attacking Ethan until he passes out. Ethan then wakes up to a family called the Bakers. The Bakers consist of Jack, Marguerite, Lucas, and Zoe. Ethan then has to explore a house to escape with his wife. He has to fight the family and solve puzzles to unlock different sections of the house. When you escape you have to make a game-changing decision, which I will not spoil.

I would give the game a 9/10. The game is visually appealing compared to Resident Evil 6, which was released in 2012. The first-person choice was excellent to give players chills when they traverse the house. The boss fights were great compared to the earlier games of the series. The game is short: players can beat the game in 4 hours, but they can beat the game in different modes. The scariest part of the game was when Ethan had to enter the second house where you are met with huge bugs from Marguerite. I recommend to anyone who is a fan of horror games to play Resident Evil 7, and the recent entries.
