An overwhelming majority of EC Indians made plans to celebrate Halloween with their friends this year.
Most Indians spent the cool evening of October 31 watching horror movies, attending parties, trick-or-treating, or passing out candy. Senior Debosschere planned to dress up as the Cheshire Cat while watching horror movies with her friends, while sophomore Lillian Geboy and freshman Gabrielle Boulay planned to go trick-or-treating. Geboy planned to dress as the “bodyguard from Lilo and Stitch,” but Boulay hadn’t decided on a costume yet. Only about 10% of the student population claimed they had no plans.
Though Indians largely chose to celebrate Halloween in some form or fashion, two other questions sharply divided the student population: which candy is best, and how old is too old to trick-or-treat?
Topping the list of Indians’ favorite candy were KitKats, Reese’s, Sour Patch Kids, and Skittles. The age-old debate about the validity of candy corn also stirred up some contention as well. Half of the students surveyed claimed not to feel strongly about the oft-derided treat, 21% professed to love it, and 14% labeled it an “insult to candy, food, and Halloween.”
As to the question of trick-or-treating age, Indians couldn’t come to a consensus either. Most students seemed to think the activity acceptable for anyone under the age of 21, but nearly 25%, like Boulay, assert that one can never be too old.
Whether they ate chocolate or candy corn, stayed inside with a movie or ventured out in costume, Halloween provided a chance for Indians to spend time with friends and make lasting memories.
The best week of the year has passed: Homecoming Week!
The 2023 East Coweta Homecoming Parade was on Friday, October 13. Food trucks, vendors, and club booths were set up in the ECHS parking lot. School clubs, organizations, alumni, and local businesses contributed floats and a sense of excitement to the community.
East Coweta’s marching band, drumline, and color guard were featured in the parade. They provided vibrant rhythms that uplifted everyone’s spirits. Behind them were sports such as football, volleyball, softball, and fishing. They each had their own floats, decorated to reflect the essence of their respective sports.
Each grade level also got a chance to showcase their creativity on their class float, with all 4 classes competing to outdo each other regarding float design, theme, and originality. SGA was in charge of the floats. The juniors won 1st place in the competition with their “Just Keep Winning” Pixar-themed float. The seniors cinched 2nd place with their Marvel-themed float, complete with superhero costumes and designs. The freshmen and sophomore floats followed the themes of Harry Potter and Star Wars, respectively.
The Homecoming Court also showed out! They represented East Coweta’s school spirit well, riding on convertibles and waving to spectators. After the parade, the Court was announced at the Pep Rally. Alan Hill was declared the 2023 Homecoming King and was crowned on stage.
At the Pep Rally, the dance team, sideline cheerleaders, and basketball cheerleaders took part in the celebration by performing routines for the crowd. Tricycle races between grade levels took place, and many students danced to music. Mr. Matt East, SGA sponsor, was in charge of Homecoming this year and did a great job organizing everything. He was the MC at the parade, making announcements and hyping the crowd up.
The Homecoming Parade is more than just an annual event, it’s a tradition that creates the backdrop for valuable school memories. It’s an important preparation to get our school and community excited for the Homecoming game and dance to follow.
The Israel-Hamas conflict, a long-standing and deeply rooted conflict in the Middle East, has garnered worldwide attention for decades. It is a multifaceted struggle that encompasses a complex web of historical, political, and humanitarian issues. This article aims to provide an overview of the conflict, its historical background, key events, and the challenges involved in achieving a lasting resolution.
The roots of the Israel-Hamas conflict can be traced back to the late 19th century, with the rise of the Zionist movement and the subsequent establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. This led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, a pivotal event in the conflict's history. The status of Jerusalem and the issue of Palestinian refugees have been central points of contention ever since Hamas, an Islamist political and militant organization, emerged during the late 1980s and early 1990s in response to the perceived failure of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to address the Palestinian cause effectively. Hamas gained support among Palestinians, particularly in the Gaza Strip, due to its provision of social services and resistance against Israeli occupation.
Key Events of Israel-Hamas Conflict
First Intifada (1987-1993): This Palestinian uprising marked a significant turning point in the conflict, with widespread protests and violence against Israeli forces. Hamas gained prominence during this period.
Oslo Accords (1993): The signing of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the PLO was seen as a potential path to peace. However, it did not lead to a final resolution of the conflict.
Second Intifada (2000-2005): A period of increased violence and conflict, including suicide bombings and Israeli military operations.
Hamas' Electoral Victory (2006): Hamas won the Palestinian Legislative Council elections, leading to a political crisis as it refused to recognize Israel or previous agreements.
Blockade of Gaza: Israel imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas's control. The blockade has had severe humanitarian consequences and is a contentious issue internationally.
Gaza Wars (2008-2009, 2012, 2014, 2021): These conflicts, primarily in the Gaza Strip, have resulted in significant casualties on both sides, further straining relations.
Challenges to Resolution of Israel-Hamas Conflict
Territorial Disputes: The question of borders, especially in Jerusalem and the West Bank, remains a major stumbling block.
Right of Return: Palestinians demand the right of return for refugees who were displaced during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, while Israel opposes this on the grounds that it would undermine its Jewish majority.
Recognition and Security: Israel demands recognition of its right to exist and its security concerns as a Jewish state, while Hamas refuses to recognize Israel's legitimacy.
International Involvement: The involvement of various international actors, including the United States, the United Nations, and neighboring countries, adds complexity to the situation.
The Israel-Hamas conflict is a deeply entrenched and multifaceted struggle, with numerous historical, political, and humanitarian dimensions. Achieving a lasting resolution is a complex challenge, with both sides deeply divided on core issues. The path to peace will require compromise, diplomacy, and the involvement of the international community. The conflict remains a global concern, and efforts to find a just and lasting solution must continue.
