The coastal cities in China have experienced the highest record of sea levels this season.
Normal sea level is defined by the average sea level from 1993 through 2011. However, the coastal sea levels in China were 3.7 inches higher than the normal sea level last year. From the period of 2012 through 2022, coastal sea levels in China were the highest since the observations were first recorded. The reason for the sea rise is due to the temperature increase in the coastal waters of China, which is caused by global warming. There are many causations for global warming, but one of the major sources is the burning of fossil fuels in factories, which releases greenhouse gasses including carbon dioxide that traps the heat in the atmosphere.
The sea level rises are causing long-term effects that link its impact to the local environments. This includes the coastal ecosystems experiencing erosion, losing tidal flats, increasing the turbidity of the groundwater ozone, and increasing the occurrence of floods and storms. The disruption of the ecosystem not only impacts the environment, but it also contributes to the great economic loss of the region.
The coastal regions serve a critical role in China as nearly half of the population in China resides in the coastal regions, and more than half of the economic profit is derived from the coastal regions. One of the coastal regions that is being threatened from the sea level rise is the city of Shanghai. Shanghai is known for being one of the wealthiest and most-developed cities in China.
China is one of the top countries that has a high contribution to the global climate change. China ranks the third place for the emission of the overall greenhouse gasses, and 27 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions are from China.

February 2023NewsThe Great Salt Lake, the largest body of salt water in the Western Hemisphere, is currently in danger of mega-drought.
The Great Salt Lake is the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. The Great Salt Lake is approximately 75 miles long and 35 miles wide at its current level. The lake's surface area is significantly increased by a slight rise in water level, which occurs in several large, flat basins. It provides water, health, and unique ecosystems.
However, experts say that The Great Salt Lake is in “unprecedented danger”. The Great Salt Lake has shrunk by two-thirds, in the glimpse of disappearing in 2024.
Why is The Great Salt Lake under a severe crisis? The problem’s roots seem to be in humans. While many theories exist on the cause of this mega-drought, the most noticeable problem is that the freshwater consumption of the lake is too high. According to more than 170 years of water reports, scientists recognized that the amount of water flowing out of the lake is severely unbalanced compared to the water flowing in the lake. Another reason for this crisis, unsurprisingly, is climate change. Climate change means less precipitation which worsens the megadrought.
What happens if The Great Salt Lake dries up? The first thing to be concerned about is the harm to global biodiversity. The potentially inedible algae will make it impossible for the lake's flies and brine shrimp to survive. Additionally, it will affect the millions of migratory birds that use the lake as a resource during their migration. The Great Salt Lake’s drought will also result in pollution. The air surrounding salt lake city could become poisonous. The water quality of the state of Utah would be an issue too. Joel Ferry, a Republican state lawmaker, states that this crisis is an “environmental nuclear bomb” that is about to be activated.
How can we save The Great Salt Lake? The most crucial action is restricting water use in The Great Salt Lake. This will solve the problem of consuming too much water in preserving the lake. Another solution is to recycle wastewater. Recycling wastewater can diversion of freshwater from sensitive ecosystems which will help preserve the lake. Most importantly, there needs to be more input than output in The Great Salt Lake.

February 2023NewsAs of February 11, over 28,000 people are reported dead from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
On Monday, February 6, around 4 a.m, one of the strongest earthquakes hit Gaziantep province in Turkey, affecting several neighboring countries of Turkey including Israel and Lebanon. The initial and epicenter of the earthquake were reportedly a 7.8 magnitude quake, followed by after shockwaves throughout the day. The strongest aftershock wave hit 59 miles away from the initial epicenter with 7.5 magnitude. Besides the strongest aftershock, several aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.7 and 5.6 hit the regions near the center of the shock.
The earthquake has left devastating effects of collapsing buildings, toppling cars, and people in the streets without any shelters. Coincidentally, cold and wet weather has hit the region, making it harder for rescue projects to be held and prone to danger. In fact, the area has experienced heavy rain and snow during the weekends. Despite being a natural disaster, the earthquake has impacted more of the low-income families by hitting places where poor towns are gathered.
Team of search and rescue have been dispatched throughout the affected areas, and help is being received internationally. Turkey has requested help from ERCC (Emergency Response Coordination Centre). The World Health Organization and NATO have also stepped into the situation through offering help. The countries aiding the area include Algeria, Canada, China, Egypt, European Union, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Norway, Pakistan, Qatar, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, U.S, U.K, and more.
The earthquake is believed to be the strongest earthquake since 1939 in Turkey. Past 25 years in Turkey, seven earthquakes that had over 7.0 magnitude have been recorded, but the earthquake from Monday was the strongest.
On October 3, 2022, North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan for the first time since 2017.
The intention of this escalation in provocations seems to be an attempt to threaten Tokyo and the U.S. homeland after recent naval drills between U.S. and South Korean forces
According to numerous reports, the launch of the intermediate-range ballistic missile took place from Mupyong-ri in Jagang Province at approximately around 7:23 a.m. local time. Similar to the September 2017 Hwasong-12 test that overflew Japan, this missile flew over 2,850 miles east of Japan and demonstrated its potential of reaching American bases on Guam from Pyongyang. Before landing in the Pacific Ocean, it also reached an altitude of 603 miles and top speed of Mach 17.
The United Nations Security Council has established several major sanctions resolutions on North Korea as a response to the country’s nuclear and missile activities since 2006. However, the regime still continues to disregard meeting those requirements. Within just the year 2022 alone, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his country’s industrial base have launched over 40 missiles of various different types and ranges including both ballistic and cruise missiles.
The recent missile was most likely the nuclear-capable Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile, which was not too long ago discovered as a “new type.”
The Tuesday morning missile test prompted Japan to issue a rare seek shelter alert for its citizens and sent distress towards Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who strongly condemned the launch, calling it an "outrageous act.” South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol promised a resolute response and U.S. President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ “ironclad” security commitment to the defense of Japan during a phone call with Mr Kishida. On top of that, the U.S. and South Korea conducted a joint attack squadron flight, ran fired precision guided bombing exercises, and also launched their own series of missiles at an uninhabited island in the sea between Korea and China.
There is no immediate comment from Kim Jong Un about the missile test, but the message is evidently clear that he is not pleased with the growing military alliance between the United States, South Korea, and Japan, signaling that he would continue to conduct more provocative tests.
Halloween celebrations in Itaewon-dong, Seoul, turned bloody as a stampede left at least 150 people dead, with 20 injured. However, experts say that the death toll may rise.
So what was the cause of this? Well this year’s Halloween for South Koreans was quite special, as it was the first Halloween celebration since Covid restrictions had been lifted. So to celebrate this achievement, many South Koreans headed to Itaewon-dong, which is known for its amazing nightlife and dining. However, due to the location's extreme popularity, it became extremely crowded as many people were at the location, and as the evening went on, witnesses stated that the crowd had become rowdy and unsettled. As a result, a stampede occurred with the most victims being women in their twenties. Additionally, two Americans were also among the victims. World leaders like President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak went on to twitter sending their condolences to the dead and injured.
Investigations are still ongoing, as the cause of the incident hasn’t been identified. Still, many videos shared online do shed light on what it was like being a witness to the whole situation. The videos consisted of many first responders being at the scene, and people doing chest compressions on the victims. This sadly was a Halloween festival gone wrong.
Queen Elizabeth II, England’s longest reigning monarch, passed away on September 8, 2022. Her body was found at Balmoral Castle in the late afternoon.
Incredibly well-known, the Queen has long been a household name. Students of today’s generation learn of her rule at school, the internet makes memes of her, and even the elderly recognize her. Since her death, many teens have expressed their shock by saying their goal of “outliving the Queen” can no longer exist.
In a world full of constant change, the queen had been a prime symbol of stability. Starting from her reign in 1952, Queen Elizabeth has gone through decades and decades of social and political change--seven decades, to be exact. Her reign of seventy years has included major world events such as the Vietnam War, the Apollo moon landing, Chernobyl, the Cold War, the 9/11 attacks, and the Covid-19 pandemic. To say that you lived to see all these events occur is a feat of itself, but to be able to say that you were the ruler of a great country while they occurred is incredible. The great acknowledgement she had earned during her reign represented the face of Britain’s imperial party. When the Queen came into power, the British empire wasn’t the single empire we know of today. It was a multinational federation. Therefore, the queen was not only known as the Queen of England, but also the Queen of multiple other nations that depended on her rule. She was a global leader, proving to be a great sense of support to movements around the world.
However, her glorified legacy also possesses a different side-a not so perfect side. Many countries who were the victims of British colonization and slavery under Queen Elizabeth’s rule have open-handedly started their motivation to not mourn. For example, the Economic Freedom Fighters, a South African political party, stated that they would not mourn her death because she represented a time of tragedy in Africa’s history. Uju Anya, a linguistics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, stated that the queen had been the monarch of a “thieving raping genocidal empire”, referencing the British conquest of Nigeria in the 1800s. These shared thoughts of people going against the monarchy are being proved in increasing amounts.
Nevertheless, the Queen was a great monarch that was the face of Britain’s royalty. She was also a daughter, a wife, a mother. She was married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. They had been together for 73 years before he passed away in the spring of 2021. They had four children, the eldest of whom is King Charles III, who is now taking the role of the throne as Elizabeth’s first-born child.
No matter the issues in supporting the Queen’s rule or not, you can’t deny the huge influence she had on Great Britain as a country, the royal monarchy, and most importantly, our world. Her leadership, trustful nature, and strong relationships she has formed with others has transformed many lives. The Queen’s lasting legacy will forever be remembered.
It has already been 7 months since Russia’s War in Ukraine started. There are so many people who died during the war: 5,587 are confirmed dead, and the true number is believed to be in the tens of thousands. The number of refugees has surpassed 6.6 million. Military losses have been heavy on both sides, with about 9,000 Ukrainians and as many as 25,000 Russians said to be killed. Here is an update on the status of Russia’s War in Ukraine, how is going, and what is happening.
The Pentagon said some Russian forces have crossed from the Kharkiv region back into Russia. “We've seen a number of Russian forces, especially in the northeast, in the Kharkiv region, cross over the border back into Russia as they’ve retreated from the Ukrainian counter-offensive,” Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters during a briefing Tuesday. But Russian forces still “do exist en masse in Ukraine,” Ryder said.
Also, The White House said Tuesday that another aid package for Ukraine could be announced soon. John Kirby, the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, said he didn't want to "get ahead of future security systems packages," when asked by CNN's Phil Mattingly about more assistance to Ukraine. "I do think you'll see another one here in coming days," Kirby continued. "We're in lockstep with the Ukrainians talking to them every day."Kirby said there were "real-time discussions going on with the Ukrainians about what their military needs are." He added: "Many of the systems that we've been providing in just the last few weeks and couple of months have proven instrumental and effective in the Ukrainians ability to go on the offense and to be actually quite effective on the defense in the last several days and weeks." For the support, President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged this week the importance of US assistance to the recent Ukrainian counteroffensive. “We prepared carefully for this. It has taken months of planning. We used reconnaissance and accuracy, we used our allies, especially the United States army, for information on this, and we used Western weapons,” he said.
So for the update for Russia's War in Ukraine, it shows that the Ukraine is successfully defending themselves against Russia, and the United States is supporting Ukraine .
