Miguel Cardona was born on July 11, 1975 in Meriden, Connecticut. Cardona, whose parents are from Puerto Rico, grew up speaking Spanish, his first language. When he entered kindergarten, he was unable to speak or understand English. This experience would influence his goals as an educator later in his life.
Cardona grew up in a public-housing complex. He attended Meriden’s public schools and studied automotive tech at H.C. Wilcox Technical High School. However, Cardona moved on to earn a Bachelor’s in Education at Central Connecticut State University. This made him the first in his family to graduate from college. Later down the road, he earned a Master’s in Bilingual/Bicultural Education and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Connecticut.
Cardona began his career as an educator teaching in the same district he grew up in. He became an elementary school teacher at Israel Putnam School. When he was 27 years old, he became a school principal. At the time, he was the youngest principal in the state and was even Connecticut’s Principal of the Year in 2012. He was a principal for 10 years.
In 2011, Cardona helped lead a task force to close educational equity gaps in Connecticut-- a cause he has devoted his career to. In 2013, he became Assistant Superintendent. Throughout his career, Cardona has been a champion for English- Language Learners, students with low-income backgrounds, and students with disabilities. In February of 2020, Miguel Cardona became the first latino to be the Commissioner of Education in Connecticut. In the summer, while schools faced the decision of remaining online or reopening, Cardona pushed for schools to reopen. He argued that in-person instruction would prevent equity gaps from growing even more during the pandemic.
In December of 2020, President Biden announced Cardona as his nominee for Secretary of Education. For most people, Cardona’s nomination came out of nowhere. Up until now, Cardona has been largely unknown on the national stage. He faces a tough feat to achieve Biden’s promise to reopen a majority of K-8 schools in his first 100 days in office. During his confirmation hearing on February 3, he faced questions ranging from student debt to high school transgender athletes. When addressing questions for reopening schools, Cardona promised to work closely with the CDC to provide science-based guidance for schools. He called for more Covid testing and for educators to be prioritized for vaccination. At the moment, it appears that Cardona has support from both sides of the aisle. However, with the impeachment process recently moving forward, Cardona’s confirmation may be delayed.
Do you not know anything about the current Vice-President Elect? Well you’re in luck! Here’s everything you need to know about Kamala Harris.
Kamala Devi Harris was born October 20, 1964 to first generation immigrants Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan Harris. Her mother was born in British India and her father was born in Jamaica, but Kamala was born in Oakland, California. Growing up, Kamala went to civil rights protests with her parents until the age of seven, when her parents divorced and her father moved out of state. When she wasn’t in school, Kamala and her sister Maya would go to work with their mother and help her clean the test tubes she used as a cancer researcher. If she wasn’t at work, she was at Church. Kamala did not spend her whole childhood in California though. Due to the immense amount of racism and sexism her mother faced working at Berkely, Shyamala moved the family to Canada where Kamala finished high school in Montreal. After she graduated, Kamala attended Howard University where she graduated in 1986 with a B.A. in political science. Then in 1989 she graduated from Hastings College with a law degree
From 1990 to 1998 Kamala served as Oakland’s Deputy District Attorney. During her time as DDA Kamala fought against gang violence, the trafficking of narcotics, and other things. Eventually, Harris became district attorney in 2004, a position she held until 2011. Next, she was the first female and the first African-American Attorney General from 2011-2016 after winning by less than 1% in the election. As Attorney General, Kamala proved herself by standing up to the Obama administration by handling a nationwide lawsuit against unfair practice in mortgage lenders, and helped ensure marriage equality in California. She also married Doug Emhoff on August 22, 2014. Years later, after Barbara Boxer retired, Kamala took her place in January of 2017 as the first African American to represent California in the United States Senate. While she was a senator, she was also on the Select Committee of Intelligence and the Judiciary Committee among other things and in 2019 published a memoir called The Truths We Hold: An American Journey. Then she set her sights on the presidency and announced her run, but by December of 2019 she dropped out due to campaign trouble. No longer a presidential nominee, Harris became an advocate for social justice reform in the wake of George Floyd’s death. After that, Biden chose her as his running mate and the rest is history.
Kamala’s life has been far from easy. She had to face racism due to Jamaican and Indian roots, as well as sexism due to the fact that she is a woman, but none of that stopped her from achieving her goals and breaking down barriers.
Well that’s everything you need to know about Kamala Harris.
Election Day is over, so why hasn’t either candidate won yet? To understand the intricacies of this very close election, let’s break down what we know so far:
A battleground state, also known as a swing state, is any state that could be equally won by either the Republican or Democratic candidate. These states are often highly sought after and are also often the deciding factors of elections. In this year’s election, there are approximately thirteen battleground states: Arizona, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.
Throughout election night and even the day after, Georgia has had voting numbers too close to call. Currently, 94% of the vote has been called, and AP (the only reliable vote-counting source) has not yet declared a winner. President Trump is up by two percent: 50.5% vs. 48.3%. Specifically for Coweta County, 67.1% of voters have voted for Pres. Trump, while 31.1% have voted for Biden. Votes are calculated by election workers who compute the voting results electronically, and also calculate hand-written ballots as well. Each county voting station works with a correspondent from AP (Associated Press), and from there AP serves the information out to the public.
Georgia has been one of the states that both groups have hoped to win, especially since Georgia is a battleground state. If President Trump were to win GA, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, he would more easily secure a second term. However, former VP Joe Biden is expected to win by a very close margin in Nevada and Wisconsin. So far, the election has felt very ambiguous especially since many mail-in votes have not yet been counted. This is the primary reason for the election hold-up. Ideally, we’d have the election results by the end of the day today, but more realistically the results should be here by the week’s end.
In the state’s elections, Senator David Perdue is projected to win another term in the U.S. Senate over challenger Jon Osoff. However, the numbers on that election are too close to call with only a 4% vote difference. Until AP calls a definite winner, there is no telling which way the election will sway. As for the special election for the second Senate seat in GA, a run-off scheduled for January will be held between current Senator Loeffler and challenger Reverend Warnock.
But what exactly is a special election, and why is it a thing?
A special election is held following a vacancy in the Senate; when that happens, the governor of whichever state has an obligation to hold a special election in order to fill that seat. Following the resignation of past senator Isaakson, Governor Kemp appointed a temporary senator, Kelly Loeffler. Her term will last until January 5-6, 2021, which will be around the same time that the run-off election concludres. Furthermore, per GA rule, a run-off election only takes place if no candidate has 50% of the vote or more--this was the case for this election as much of the vote was split between a third Republican candidate (Collins).
*Update 6:40 PM (11/4) - 97% of the votes for the presidential election are in, Trump leads in polls 50% to Biden’s 48.8%. Electoral college stands at 264 (Biden) to 214 (Trump).
If Biden wins Nevada, he will be the new president of the U.S.A.
**Update 6:40 PM (11/4) - 96% of the votes for GA Senate are in, Perdue leads in polls 50.4% to Ossoff’s 47.3%.
***Warnock will face Senator Loeffler in a run-off election in January
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born on November 20, 1942 to Joseph Robinette Sr. and Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan. Joe was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania with his brothers and sister Francis, James, and Valerie. He attended St. Paul’s Elementary School, Archmere Academy, the University of Delaware, and Syracuse University Law School. Joe graduated in 1968 with a law degree.
During his time in law school, Biden married his first wife Neilia Hunter, and a year after graduating he fathered his first child Beau Biden. In 1970, he became a member of the New Castle County Council, and started his own firm a year after that. While doing both of those things, he still found time to father two more kids named Hunter and Naomi. In 1973, Joe became the 5th youngest U.S. Senator ever at the age of 29, by beating J. Caleb Biggs. Biden served as senator for 36 years, and during that time, he also served as Chairman of the Committee on Foriegn Relations, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and as a sponsor for the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. He did run for president in 1987 only to drop out a year later. 20 years after that, Joe decided to run again, only to drop out and help Barack Obama with his campaign instead. He was also selected as President Obama’s running mate. On January 20, 2009 he became America’s 47th Vice President, a position he held for 8 years.
Joe Biden’s life has not been one without pain; he has suffered many hardships. One difficulty in his life is that Joe Biden has always suffered from a debilitating stutter, and was even mocked in school for it. Biden also had to recover from the death of first wife, Neilia, and daughter Naomi, while helping his sons heal, from a devastating car crash in 1972. Not to mention, he survived two brain aneurysms in the 80’s. He also had to deal with the death of his father in 2002, his mother in 2010, and his son Beau in 2015. Biden is also no stranger to scandal, having his fair share of allegations. Nothing seems to stop him, however, seeing as he remarried in 1977, had another daughter named Ashley in 1981, and after going through all of that he is still forging ahead in his political career by running for president in this election.
Do you not know anything about our current president? Well you’re in luck. Here’s everything you need to know about the Republican Candidate Donald Trump, just in time for the election.
Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946 to Fred and Mary Anne Macleod Trump. He was born and raised in Queens, New York City along with his brothers and sisters Robert, Fred Jr., Elizabeth, and Maryanne. For his education, Donald attended Kew-Forest School, New York Military Academy, Fordham University, and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In college he studied economics and specialized in finance until he graduated in 1968.
After graduating, he managed the holdings of rental housing at his father’s business, and in 1971, he took control of said father’s real-estate company. His business ventures didn’t stop there; in 1974 he became president of the Trump Organization, a collection of Trump-owned corporations and partnerships. In 1976 he bought the Commodore Hotel and reopened it in 1980 as the Grand Hyatt Hotel and then again in 1983 as Trump Tower. During this time he also married his first wife, Ivana Trump, and had his first child, Donald Trump Jr. Over several years he also invested in multiple casinos, bought a 118 room mansion, built a 282 foot yacht, and started an air-shuttle service. While still being a business mogul, in 2004, Trump starred in, “The Apprentice”, which had contestants compete in business-related projects until there was only one person left. This person would become Trump’s apprentice for a year. Trump hosted the show for fifteen seasons. He also started a mortgage company, an online education company, a charity, and co authored several books on entrepreneurship and his business career.
Fame, money, and success didn’t make his life perfect, however. His brother Fred Jr. died in 1981, his father in 1999, and his other brother Robert died just this past August. Not to mention, Trump has filed for bankruptcy on four to six separate occasions. He is no stranger to controversy, as he has been in at least twenty-four scandals over the course of his lifetime, nor is he inexperienced with legal trouble, due to all of the lawsuits, allegations, and investigations that he has dealt with. Also, over a period of several decades, Trump went on to have two other children with his first wife, named Ivanka and Eric, divorce Ivana in 1992, marry Marla Maples and father Tiffany Trump, and then divorce Marla, and marry his current wife Melania Trump, fathering Barron Trump in 2006.
Trump has shown an interest in politics since the 80s when he stated several times that he was thinking about running for president. Interestingly enough, he hasn’t always been a Republican, transferring to the Reform Party in 1999, but he did eventually return. He even published a book called, “The America We Deserve” in 2000, which stated his political opinions. Fifteen years later, he announced his presidential candidacy and we all know what happened next.
Well that is everything you need to know about Donald J. Trump, and be on the lookout for “Getting to Know the Government: Joe Biden Edition”.
Businessman, reality show host, President of the United States. Do you know Trump?
In Trump’s youth, he attended Fordham University before transferring to Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. After college, Trump and his father would work on real estate together during the 1970s, specifically apartment complexes in boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn, New York. Trump and his father would partner again to purchase and revamp the now Grand Hyatt Hotel, igniting his own development career. During the 1980s, Trump would go on to build and develop multiple properties in New York City, including the Trump Tower and Plaza. He would continue to license his name, using it for casinos, hotels, golf courses, resorts and residential properties.
Throughout Trump’s real estate career, his properties have run into some financial complications: it has been confirmed that several of his businesses such as his resorts, casinos and hotels have filed for bankruptcy at least four times. A common misconception is that Trump himself filed for bankruptcy, when in actuality it was his properties.
In 2004, “The Apprentice” premiered on NBC screens, showcasing entrepreneurs competing to work with Trump and his organization. The elimination-style reality show had 15-18 competitors run one of Trump’s companies. Trump hosted and judged on the show until 2015 when he left to run for president. Trump left the show after season 14 and was replaced with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
During Trump’s Presidency, his tax plan (Tax Cuts and Job Act) went into effect on January 1, 2018. The plan spurred great economic growth and left a lasting impact on the economy. On December 20, 2019, Trump added a Space Force as the sixth branch of the U.S Armed forces. Most of our powerful adversaries already have a Space Force, and America would now be with them.
Throughout three marriages, Trump fathers five children. With the exception of one child, they all spoke to advocate for his reelection at the Republican Convention in August. Did you know Trump is the only President in our history that was elected without previously having any political background?
To many, Trump’s presidential success is spontaneous. However, in October 1999 Trump planned on forming his own Presidential exploratory committee before abandoning his bid in February 2000. The skillful businessman has implemented many things from boosting the American economy to adding the Space Force during his presidency.
Will he have the votes to remain in office? I guess we will have to see when November 4th rolls around.
Joe Biden has spent 47 years in public service, but do you know Joe?
As a child, he suffered from a stuttering problem but overcame this and other challenges to rise to one of the highest offices in the land.
Did you know that Biden’s first wife and young daughter were killed in a car accident after he was elected to the Senate? His sons survived but were injured. He earned the nickname “Amtrak Joe” because of the hours he spent traveling back and forth from D.C. to Delaware to be with his sons. Joe Biden is dedicated to his family.
His time in the Senate was characterized by ups and downs. Although he faced criticism for his handling of Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, he also championed women issues. Joe Biden Introduced a historic bill that became the Violence Against Women Act. The VAWA led to federal funds to be directed to shelters for victims of domestic disputes. It also led to enhanced sentences for repeat offenders. Joe Biden understood the importance of bipartisanship, often working with Republicans in an effort for a more perfect democracy. His spirit of cooperation was one of the key reasons Barack Obama chose him to be his Vice President.
His love of this country eventually led him to try for the highest office in the land. Did you know this isn’t the first time he has run for President? He first ran in the 1988 election but dropped out shortly after because of allegations of scholastic resume padding and plagiarism. He ran again in 2008. After the death of his son, Beau, he decided not to run in 2016. If he wins the election, he will be the oldest American President.
Joe Biden has a long tenure of service to America. On November 4th, we will find out if the boy from Scranton, a dedicated father and a leader who knows the importance of bipartisanship, will become the President of the United States of America.
