Curriculum Overview

For our algebra classes we will be utilizing the CMP3. It is a math program that focuses on inquiry-based math. Using this program allows our students to focus on problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections. Each Investigation (Unit/subunit) will be focusing on real world applications. If you'd like more information you can review their website here

UNITES OF STUDIES

Unit 1: Thinking w Mathematical Models

Students will develop the concept of a mathematical model and its applications in problem solving. Algebra is used to model real situations and to answer questions about these situations. Students will represent data using tables, pictures, graphs, and equations. Students will describe the relationship between two variables in dealing with linear functions and equations.

Unit 2: Growing, Growing, Growing

Students will examine exponential functions and understand that the growth pattern in exponential functions is multiplicative. Students will be introduced to scientific notation.

Unit 3: Frogs, Fleas, and Painted Cubes: Students will explore quadratic functions, an important type of nonlinear relationship. Students will use tables, graphs, and equations of quadratic relationships to solve problems in a variety of situations from geometry, science, and business.

Unit 4: Say it with Symbols: Students will develop an understanding of using symbolic expressions to represent and reason about relationships. Students will write and interpret equivalent expressions, combine expressions to form new expressions, predict patterns of change represented by an equation or expression, and solve equations.
