Literacy

Read-Aloud Novel:

We will start the year reading Fish In a Tree aloud. This novel is written by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and will include themes of courage, family and friendship, perseverance, and staying true to oneself. As we read the novel together, we pause for discussion. This book has been put on your child’s Learning Ally account, enabling your child to see and hear the text. It is an excellent way for students to catch up on any of the reading they may have missed during Literacy class. Our class will be working with Donna Torf, Speech Language Pathologist. She will be pushing into our class two times a week. Karen Bellak is our reading specialist.

An overview of our literacy class

Students in this Literacy class will be using Making Connections and Spotlight on Comprehension. Your child’s Literacy program addresses several different skills to help enhance students’ reading abilities, including the following: phonemic awareness, decoding, word study, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, grammar, writing, and fluency, using a variety of genres.

READING LOG-

In Junior High, we hold our students accountable for reading each night. Currently, students are expected to read a minimum of 15-20 minutes daily. Each day during our literacy block, we ask two students to share a part of what they read with the class. Eventually, students will be utilizing a reading log to write about what they've read. We will begin this activity by offering sentence starters to support them. For example, the most important part of what I read last night was ____________________________.
