Coventry High School

Science & Technology Department

The Coventry High School Science Department offers a variety of courses designed to educate students about the physical world and to prepare students for science-related and medical careers. All students are required to take a core curriculum consisting of physical science, biology, and chemistry (biology, chemistry, and physics for the honors program). These courses provide a foundation for further study of the sciences in advanced courses such as AP Physics II, AP Biology II, AP Chemistry II, AP Environmental Science and Anatomy & Physiology. The Science curriculum is a standards-based program aligned to the new Common Core standards and the Next Generation Science Standards, as required by the RI Department of Education.

College credit is offered for some of these programs through the Rhode Island College Early Enrollment Program (EEP). To provide additional opportunities for further study, the Science Department offers a number of electives including forensics, aquatic ecology, biotechnology and environmental science courses, all involving field work. Our emphasis is placed not only on science education but also on the application of mathematics, developing problem-solving strategies and techniques and building science literacy skills. Student progress will be measured using a variety of assessments including authentic assessment, projects, as well as the use of traditional assessments.
