ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT BRIGHT STARS

Curriculum

Our curriculum framework is based on the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS).  These standards  provide early childhood professionals with a common understanding of what children should know and be able to do as they exit preschool and enter kindergarten.  The RIELDS are organized into 9 domains: Physical Health and Motor Development, Social and Emotional Development, Language Development, Literacy, Cognitive Development, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Creative Arts.  In our play-based preschool classrooms, children learn by interacting, exploring, and actively engaging with materials, educators, and peers.  Through a multi-sensory approach to learning with hands-on activities, all children can connect to what is being taught.

Inclusion

All children learn in a nurturing environment, incorporating the principles of universal design for learning that support each child's pace and style of learning.  An integrated preschool setting is one in which children with disabilities are integrated or included in a classroom with typically developing children.  The children with disabilities participate in all of the activities within the class and modifications are made as needed.  Within a quality inclusive preschool classroom, children relate and interact with all peers in play and daily routines and engage in experiences that promote the development of attention, self-control and the understanding that others have different experiences and perspectives.

HERE ARE SOME FACTS ABOUT INCLUSION

Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards

The Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards (RIELDS) are a guiding source for Coventry preschool teachers, leaders, and families.  They provide an organized set of high standards for the teaching of young children.  They were designed with all children in mind...English language learners, children with special health care needs, children with disabilities, and children who are typically developing.  The RIELDS provide a framework for what children should know and be able to do throughout their infant, toddler and preschool years prior to entering Kindergarten.

Fun Family Activities

The Fun Family Activity Cards were created by parents, early childhood educators, and local experts, along with the Rhode Island Department of Education.  They were created to provide parents/guardians with information and fun ways to support the development and learning of young children at home. The activities were designed to help your child develop skills that will help them to learn throughout their early childhood years.  The Fun Family Activity Cards reflect the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards and align with standards-based curriculum provided in both early care and education settings.  They are available in both English and Spanish.
