INTRODUCTION
During the 2nd semester, we will be reading a short Spanish book, titled Agentes Secretos y el Mural de Picasso by Mira Canion. This story is written for early Spanish learners and, therefore, isn't your next prize-winning novel. The storyline is simple and not meant to be "thrilling". At times, the text will seem repetitive, but that is for the reinforcement of grammar concepts and words. This story will have only 100 unique words in it and will use all simple present tense concepts, most of which you already know. There will be a glossary included that you will be able to use for words you do not know.
SPANISH CIVIL WAR:
This book is valuable, though, because it is also set in a culturally-relevant time for us to study: the Spanish Civil War and features elements of this historical era. Please watch the short video below for more information on the Spanish Civil War:
PICASSO'S "GUERNICA":
Another crucial aspect to the understanding of the story that we are about to read is some back-knowledge about the famous artist Pablo Picasso and his famous painting "Guernica". While the story-line and some of the meanings for different elements of this painting are fictional, the history of the painting and its significance to Spanish history is not made-up. For more on Picasso and this painting, please watch the short video below:
