Ancient Times
The toasting of bread is an ancient practice. Early civilizations would place bread over an open fire in order to preserve it.
1905
Engineer Albert Marsh created a nickel and chromium composite called Nichrome. This alloy was safe and durable when heated.
1909
Frank Shailor invented the D-12 model. This was the first promising electric toaster. This toaster was considered the first commercially successful electric toaster.
1913
The Copeman Electric Stove Company introduced the "toaster that turns toast". This stopped the need for the toast having to be turned over by hand.
1919
Mechanic Charles Strite wanted to solve the problem of burnt toast. To solve this, Strite combined a timer and springs creating the first pop-up toaster.
1926
A redesigned version of Strite's toaster, called the ToastMaster, became a part of kitchen appliances. This toaster became available to the public and was a success!
1980
The slots in toasters were made wide enough so bagels, waffles, and thick bread slices could be toasted.
