The invention of the Freezer can be dated back to..
EARLY PRESERVATION METHODS!
People before freezers and refrigeration had to get creative for keeping food. Methods such as salting, drying, smoking, and canning. There was also the idea of storing food in cool caves or burying them in snow.
Ice Houses (1800s)
Underground structures were used to store ice during ancient and medieval periods. Ice was found in wintertime and colder regions. The ice is then taken to icehouse and stored there.
Constructed using insulating materials like straw, wood, or even animal hides to maintain the internal temperature and prevent the ice from melting too quickly
Robert Morris's Icehouse aka America's first icehouse
They laid the groundwork for the development of mechanical refrigeration technology, which led to the modern freezer.
The Mechanical freezer
In the 1800s, inventors started to find a way to produce ice.
The first artificial refrigeration in 1748. Scottish scientist William Cullen used a pump to create a partial vacuum over a container of diethyl ether, then boiled, absorb heat from the surrounding air. Just like the icehouse, this experiment led to the modern freezer.
Inventors and their contributions to the freezer
Oliver Evans (1805)
Designed the first refrigeration machine using vapor instead of liquid.
John Gorrie (1840)
Referred to as the father of refrigeration. Invented the first ice making machine and air cooling system. Air to cool water, which in turn produced ice.
Jacob Perkins (1834)
Patented the capor compression refridgeration system. A closed loop of refrigerant that circulated through a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, allowing for the creation of a controlled cooling environment.
James Harrison and Alexander Twining (1850s)
Their separate work on refrigeration systems brought about the first commercial ice making machines and the concept of using cooling systems for food preservation
Fred W. Wolf
Introduced the first domestic electric refrigerator with a small freezing compartment
Thomas Midgley JR (1930)
Inventor of the modern freezer. Designed a refrigerator with a freezing compartment.
Became the industry standard
These inventions served as the beginning in refrigeration systems. Mechanical freezing technology continues to evolve to the modern freezers we know.
Thomas Midgley JR
“I wanted to make a product that would help people preserve their food for longer periods of time. I knew that if I could develop a reliable and efficient refrigerant, then this would be possible.”
