In addition to special education, The Cottonwood School (TCS) also offers a variety of general education intervention supports. Our school's unique Speech Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Program is designed to support general education students with speech and/or language concerns.
Speech MTSS Program Overview
There are four, 6-week cycles that occur over the course of the school year.
Students meet virtually with a speech language pathologist in TCS's Zoom platform.
Students receive targeted support 25-minutes per week at a scheduled time.
The intervention sessions consist of no more than three students (matched by grade level and area of concern to be targeted).
Daily home practice activities are provided.
Progress data is collected weekly to help guide next steps.
Students are referred to the Speech MTSS Program by their Student Study Team. The team consists of the parent, HST, student support coordinator and a speech language pathologist (SLP). Once a student concern is raised, an SST team collaboratively begins the process of gathering information pertinent to the student's educational success. Next an SST meeting is held to consider all the student's information, review the team's concerns, identify if the student is struggling, and determine the level of support that the student may need. At this meeting, the SST team may agree to refer the student to the Speech MTSS Program. If a disability is suspected, a referral to special education is made.
If you have concerns regarding your student's speech, please reach out to your HST.
