We are excited to share that this year, Cotham School is a premium member of the Zero Carbon Schools Programme by the Green Schools Project. This initiative empowers our students to lead the way in tackling the climate crisis and helps us take practical steps toward becoming a carbon-neutral school.
We need your help to get started! To create an accurate "Carbon Map" of our school we are looking to gather some information on our students and staff's travel and eating habits.
A survey has been posted to your child's whole year group Google Classroom. Please can I ask that you encourage your child to complete this survey by Tuesday 27 January. The survey is mega short - no more than two minutes.
The more data we gather, the more accurate and impactful this process will be on our sustainability policies going forward, ultimately helping to make Cotham School a greener place in our community.
Please click here for further information.
Thank you for your support in helping our students become leaders in sustainability.

Update
It has been another busy week for Year 7. Our assembly this week focused on Martin Luther King Jr., as we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. Ms Kelly delivered some important messages during the assembly, and Year 7 showed great respect as they listened attentively and took in all the information shared.
On Wednesday, we welcomed our Guide Dog visitor, Pat, along with her Guide Dog, Winnie. Pat shared her powerful and inspiring story of being born partially sighted, growing up blind, and having an eye removed at the age of 14. She spoke about her journey into adulthood, working life, and eventually receiving her first Guide Dog.
Students listened attentively and laughed along as Pat shared some wonderful and funny stories about her dogs. There was also plenty of time for questions, as well as the chance to meet and gently pat Winnie. It was a memorable and engaging experience for everyone involved.
Coins in the Sweet Tube - Guide Dog Puppy Appeal
Thank you to everyone in Year 7 who supported the Coins in the Sweet Tube activity. We raised an amazing £60, which is enough to fund two Guide Dogs harnesses.
A special well done to 7AT, who raised the most within their tutor group and celebrated their success with a well-earned tub of sweets.
Fantastic effort from everyone involved!

Another productive week in Year 11. On Monday and Wednesday our Revision Workshops continued, Ms Khan and Ms Sainsbury were really impressed with the focus and engagement from students.
Please find the resources attached to support students if they wish to revisit the content provided in the workshop. I have also included a blank version of the revision timetable should anybody want to create a new one.
Well done to the Year 11 girls who took part in the U16 Football Festival. It was great to hear about their experience. Thank you for representing the school so well!

Wellbeing week at Post 16
This week has been wellbeing week at Post 16 with a range of activities available for students to take part in. Mx Sciubba led a great assembly over the last fortnight on this. Students have been treated to craft sessions, fidget toy making sessions, a lunchtime walk and of course meeting the lovely Jade, our therapy dog. A workshop on managing stress and anxiety is coming next tern. The link between attainment and wellbeing is strong and it has been great to see students get involved.
Mr G Buchanan
Deputy Director of Post 16
Art of the Week
The Year 9 students explored the use of typography as a powerful visual tool by creating protest artworks inspired by the bold, expressive style and messages of contemporary artist Bob and Roberta Smith. Through this project, students investigated how text, layout, and hand-drawn lettering can communicate strong opinions and social messages, developing their own typographic protest designs in response to issues they care about.
The Turing Institute - Data Science and AI Careers Workshop
We are delighted to share that our school recently hosted a workshop led by The Turing Institute, focusing on careers in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Students from Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 in Computer Science took part, gaining valuable insights into emerging career pathways. We are proud to be the only school in Bristol to offer this opportunity, enabling our students to build connections with government‑backed employers working at the forefront of technology.
We are especially pleased that our Year 12 and 13 students will also have the chance to apply for The Turing Institute’s Summer Experience, taking place in August 2026.
Thank you for your continued support as we create exciting opportunities for our learners.
This term in English, KS3 have taken part in lessons on poetry writing linked to the Young Poet Laureate competition. Students can independently submit their final poetry responses to Ms Elliott before Sunday 25 January.
Last term Year 9, students wrote descriptive pieces on the theme of ‘Dystopian Bristol’. Well done to Zack whose work has been selected by Ms Howfield for the ‘Excellence in English’ display and can be read here.
A reminder that it is essential that Year 11 students have the correct equipment for their GCSE Maths mock exams (starting on Monday 2 February). They will need a pen, pencil, ruler, protractor, compass and (for Paper 2) a scientific calculator. These can be bought from larger supermarkets or stationery shops. Students should NOT expect to borrow equipment on the day.
Career of the Week.....is K9 - FOOD SCIENTIST!
Could this be a career for your child?
Is your child a natural with food? Do they love learning about how other foods compliment each other? A career as a FOOD SCIENTIST might be a perfect fit!
