Career Shadow

The career shadow is an opportunity for students to connect with professionals in different industries, learn about a career pathway, and experience their workplace environment. This activity is intended for students to explore options post-graduation to help with their decision in choosing careers and pathways. If you are a student, please pick up or download the Career Shadow Packet before proceeding. Some of the items that you need to turn in are available as Google Forms.

Before the shadow:

  • Discuss with your parents or a BCHS volunteer/staff member to identify a career field or occupation that you find interesting, and/or people you already know that you can connect with. You can find helpful and specific lists of occupations through your Oregon CIS profile.
  • Research specific organizations, institutions, businesses, or individuals in your vicinity that take part in this work. Beyond CHS also has a list of professionals who have volunteered to have students shadow them.
  • Contact at least two people (in case one does not respond or cannot commit to it), asking them to shadow for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Be sure to say your name, your school, and to explain what the shadow will entail (an informational interview, a quick tour of their facility, and an evaluation of your visit. You will also need to ask about appropriate attire.
  • If you are below 18, you are required to have your parent/guardian sign a few forms in the career shadow packet regarding transportation and participation. Turn these in before your scheduled shadow.
  • Prepare yourself mentally. How will you make this visit most meaningful to you? Read through the suggested informational interview questions in the career shadow packet, and be prepared to ask them during the shadow, or feel free to prepare at least 5 meaningful questions.
  • At least the day before your shadow, confirm with your host about your arrangements. Also be sure that you have their correct name and contact information, and a specific location that you plan to meet. If your availability changes and cannot make the scheduled shadow, you should contact your host as soon as possible.

The Day of the Shadow:

  • Remember to dress in appropriate attire for the site.
  • You'll want to show up on time so set alarms and plan to be 5-10 minutes early.
  • Bring your career shadow packet with the informational interview questions, something to write with, and the evaluation form.
  • Before leaving, ask for a business card and to complete the evaluation form.

After the Shadow:

  • Complete the reflection sheet.
  • Maintain any confidentiality of the worksite!
  • Complete and turn in your shadow packet, including the informational interview, evaluation form, reflection sheet, and a copy of your thank you letter/email if you did one. You can do this via Dropbox, or in person at Beyond CHS (room 120). These need to be completed to get the passing grade.
  • If you ended up enjoying the visit and your host's career, consider keeping in contact with them. Consider keeping them within your network as you advance throughout your career!
