About Career Convention

The Benton County High School Career Convention is a partnership between the Corvallis School District 509J, Oregon State University's College of Business (COB), Austin Entrepreneurship Program (AEP), Benton County High Schools, Corvallis Public Schools Foundation, and Corvallis Chamber of Commerce. High school students will engage in career education through occupational panels and booths, keynote speakers and mock interviews. All juniors must attend as part of their career education requirement, or must make it up their senior year.

Career Convention for school year 2019-2020 takes place on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, from 9:30am-2:15pm.

Preparing for Career Convention

Beyond CHS should have visited one of your classes before winter break to give quick information about the convention, discuss mock interview tips, get you started on your resume (which you will need for your mock interview), and register for the convention.

If you have not registered yet, please do so at bentoncountyhscc.com.

Permission forms are available in Beyond CHS if you lost yours or were absent during the presentation; they are due in Beyond CHS by January 15th.

During one of the January Advisor sessions, all Juniors must attend the Career Convention Assembly.

Someone from Beyond CHS will be available all day on Thursday, February 6th, and Friday, February 7th to assist you with polishing up your resumes. You are also able to make appointments in Beyond CHS for prior help. Here are more resources for tips on writing/editing your resume:

Preparing for mock interview

The Career Convention will consist of a mock interview portion, which will allow career professionals to give students feedback on their resume and interview performance. Practicing your eye contact, polishing up your resume, and having a conversation about your skills and experiences in an organized way helps you prepare for the mock interview portion. Dress nicely, modestly, and professionally. Wear a collared shirt/nice blouse and nice slacks/modest skirt. Low heels, flats, dress shoes, and limited jewelry are recommended. No jeans, no tennis shoes, if possible.
Bring at least 2 copies of your resume; one will be given to your interviewer and the other will be returned to Beyond CHS.
Leave your backpacks in your locker or at home. Bring a small drawstring bag, briefcase, or reusable bag to pick up items at the convention. A notebook/folder and a pen/pencil will be useful for storing resumes flat and taking notes.
Come to school at the regular time and go to your first period. At 9 AM you will be released to go to the cafeteria. Pick up your convention packet there and head straight to the buses.
We will depart at 9:15 AM sharp! We will return to CHS by 2:30 PM
Fill in and return reflection papers (in packet) on the bus. If you forget, then return them ASAP to Beyond CHS (Room 120). You will not receive credit for the trip if you do not turn it in.
