Elaine has applied metabolic phenotyping in the areas of toxicology, molecular epidemiology, nutrition, and health. Her goal is to strengthen existing analytical frameworks to illuminate the biochemical pathways involved in the intestinal microbial control of human metabolism through the chemical elucidation of biomarkers derived from microbes associated with health and to establish variations in molecular phenomena among individuals.

He has extensive experience in enzymology and in the use of multi-omic approaches for the analysis of microbial communities. Diana López-Alvarez is a biologist graduated from the University of Valle (2007, Colombia). She holds a Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (2014, Ecuador), another Master’s degree in Introduction to Research in Agricultural Sciences and Natural Environment from the Zaragoza University (2011, Spain), and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences and the Natural Environment (2016). Currently, she serves as a researcher and professor at Universidad Nacional de Colombia – Sede Palmira, focusing on the application of bioinformatics tools for biodiversity research. Her research interests encompass molecular biology, population genetics, systematics, phylogeography, bioinformatics, and ecology.

Dr David Johnston-Monje
Dr. David, originally from Bogota, Colombia, and raised in Peru and Jamaica before settling in Ottawa, Canada, embarked on a remarkable journey in plant biology from a young age, influenced by familial ties to meat science. His academic path led him to diverse research endeavors spanning the chemical ecology of medicinal plants, wood genetics, and microbial ecology of maize. He expanded his expertise through international collaborations, exploring topics such as education policy, nutrient genetics of potatoes, and dynamics of plant microbiomes across various continents. Notably, his groundbreaking discoveries on maize microbiome transmission through seed contributed to the foundation of Indigo Agriculture, a pioneering company in endophyte research. His work there, which led to numerous patents, propelled Indigo to become one of the most well-funded agricultural startups globally. Seeking new frontiers, Dr. Johnston-Monje now investigates plant microbial ecology in Colombia, leveraging his expertise as Principal Investigator and Max Planck Tandem Group Leader at Universidad del Valle, collaborating with the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Germany.
Dr Cesar Mota
Dr. César Mota is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at UFMG. He holds a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering (North Carolina State University, USA, 2006), a Master’s in Civil and Environmental Engineering (University of Nevada, USA, 2001), and a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering (Federal University of Ceará, 1998). He is the coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Sustainable Wastewater Treatment Plants (INCT-ETEs Sustentáveis), funded by CNPq and FAPEMIG, and coordinates two national wastewater surveillance networks: the Covid Sewage Network and the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network in Wastewater. These networks are supported by the Ministry of Health. Additionally, Dr. Mota currently coordinates research projects funded by the Royal Society (UK) and Brazilian funding agencies. His research focuses on wastewater treatment and water supply, with an emphasis on the recovery of by-products from wastewater, microalgae treatment systems, the removal/inactivation of waterborne pathogens in water and wastewater, and the use of wastewater monitoring as an epidemiological tool. He was a permanent professor at the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University (UK) from 2007 to 2012, where he coordinated projects funded by the Royal Society (UK) and the European Commission. He is a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow - Level 1D.
