Introduction to ARt-
Art classes at Cornell provide students with a foundational understanding of the visual arts. Through hands-on projects, discussion, and analysis, students will explore the elements of art and principles of design, learn basic techniques in a variety of media, and develop an appreciation for artistic expression across cultures and history. Each year building upon the next, a willingness to experiment and be creative is a must.
Goals
By the end of high school, students will:
Understand and apply the elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, value, form, and space).
Use the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity) in creative work.
Have experimented with a variety of media such as drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and mixed media.
Developed skills in art critique—describing, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating works of art.
Gain awareness of historical and cultural contexts in art.
Become a confident, creative, resourceful, problem-solving individual freely able to express their unique personal vision.
