Quasi-Static Impact of Origami Crash Boxes with Various Profiles
Quasi-Static Impact of Origami Crash Boxes with Various Profiles
Designed a family of Origami Crash Boxes featuring origami patterns in thin-walled tubes.
Analyzed the crushing process using FEA and validated the results through comprehensive experiments, which included designing and printing molds, manufacturing thin-walled tubes, and conducting compression tests.
Outcomes and impact:
Found a diamond-shaped collapse mode triggered in the new origami crash boxes;
Achieved the results that reduced peak force and improved energy absorption simultaneously in the new origami crash boxes, which can be used as energy absorption devices in transport vehicles.
