The first session will focus on orientation by establishing shared definitions of public scholarship. We will also share a code of conduct and collaboratively decide how to communicate publicly about the workshop.
9:30 - 10:30
In this session we will get to know each other. Participants will have 2 minutes each to introduce themselves and share their experience with and interest in public scholarshop
Break 10:30 - 10:45
10:45 - 12:00
We will host an panel of experienced public scholars and civil servants to share their expertise related to public scholarship and its impacts. The panel will include workshop authors, Casey Fiesler, Avriel Epps, Kate Starbird, and Anna Lenhart, and will be facilitated by another workshop organizer. After a short facilitated discussion, workshop participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss public scholarship with the panelists.
Lunch 12:00 - 1:30
Participants will be free to spend lunchtime however they like; however, we will host informal opportunities to socialize with workshop organizers and attendees.
1:30 - 3:30
In this interactive activity, participants will be invited to creatively illustrate their current understanding of public scholarship, networked media, and the institutional challenges they face. By storyboarding these obstacles and identifying potential strategies for action, we will discuss how institutions and individuals can organize in solidarity to resist ongoing attacks on scholars and science. This session will be lead by workshop organizer, Bya Beatrys.
3:45 - 4:30
We will wrap up the day with a time for reflection and debrief, focusing on identifying open needs of generating ideas for supporting public scholarship and scholars moving forward.
