Function The urogenital system removes nitrogenous wastes in the forms of urates and other wastes metabolisms. It also aids in maintaining the body's osmotic fluid balance.
"Fun-Fact" Chickens don't have a bladder, but the urogenital system typically are a part of the urogenital system.
Kidney
A kidney is a three-lobed structure in the dorsal cavity of the abdomen. The kidneys help remove waste and extra water from the blood. Its main function in chickens is to maintain the chemical composition of body fluids (blood).
Ureters
These are tubules that emerge from the most cranial and middle lobes of the kidneys and run parallel to the abdominal aorta as well as terminating in the cloaca. The ureter ultimately deposits as a dense mucous stringy urine.
Adrenals
Adrenals are endocrine glands that are located anterior and dorsal to the most anterior lobe of the kidneys. This regulates vital physiological functions in the chickens. Removal of this gland would lead to death of this bird. These also produce many hormones. These are mostly on top of the kidneys. In this picture the kidneys are labeled K, and the small glands located on top and a little to the right are the adrenal glands that are being pointed to by the arrows.
