Park Region Hall staff 2018 - 2019
Park Region Hall staff 2018 - 2019
I participated in Residence Life for three years as a Resident Assistant, Director's Assistant, and Building Manager.
The main highlights of these positions were planning and organizing monthly floor events, creating monthly bulletin boards and newsletters, hosting educational events, assisting residents with signing up for counseling or tutoring services, and mediating roommate conflicts.
During my time in residence life, I responded to several emergency situations involving at-risk residents which led me to create a presentation about mental health with two other staff members. We presented this presentation at the Red River Valley Residence Life Conference where we discussed how student staff members can help address mental health concerns in residents before they become an emergency situation.
As a Resident Assistant, I earned the "First Year Staff Member of the Year" award, and I earned the "Best Building Manager" award in my final year of Residence Life.
Receiving the Senator of the Month award
I participated in Student Government for three years as a Freshman Class Representative, a Sophomore Class Representative, and the Student Involvement Council Commissioner.
In each of the class representative roles, I attended student senate and voted on issues involving the student body, sat on student and faculty committees, and worked on different projects including an initiative related to increasing wheelchair accessibilty on campus.
As the Student Involvement Council Commissioner, I chaired a committee of ten people that met twice each month. The committee was in charge of allocating money to student organizations from an annual budget of $60,000. I organized the two student organization fairs on campus, was a member of the student cabinet, and attended faculty senate meetings. In this role, I also sat on additional student and faculty committees, presented budgets to the Academic Affairs faculty committee, and sat on the hiring committee responsible for appointing new Student Government cabinet members.
In my final month as a commissioner, I earned the Student Government senator of the month award.
During the fall semester of my senior year, I tutored one student in microbiology. We met for two hours each week, and each session I went over class lecture and lab materials to enhance the student's understanding of microbiology concepts. I answered questions over Zoom and email throughout the semester, offered general support for the class, and prepared study guides and tips tailored to my student's needs. My student let me know they were struggling to get passing grades on the very first exams, and after tutoring, achieved a 96% on the final exam for the class.
Walking alongside other committee members in the Homecoming parade
I experienced the planning side of Homecoming for one year as a member of the Alumni Breakfast Committee along with three other students. Our committee was in charge of organizing 13 alumni breakfasts around campus, and recruiting and training over 20 students to be breakfast hosts.
After being on the Homecoming committee, I was asked to sit on the hiring committees for the Homecoming and Family Weekend chair positions with three other students. The committee made recommendations for hiring the two open chair positions.
Family Weekend committee members 2018 - 2019
I served on the Family Weekend committee each year I was able to, on the Halftime Show, Ice Cream Social, and Tailgating Committees.
For me personally, going to college was made possible by my family's support and guidance. I wanted to be a part of Family Weekend since it's just one way to give back to all of our family (and non-family) members who are partly responsible our many successes as students.
I feel that it's an accomplishment in itself to have played intramural volleyball with the same team all four years of college, especially because we were initially just a bunch of strangers. I was a volleyball player for over ten years of my life, so it was a special experience to be involved in the sport I love throughout college.
During my junior year, I hosted a radio show every Wednesday night with my friend, Shawna. I never pictured myself being part of the on campus radio station, but it was a fun experience to get to connect with Concordia students I'd never met that frequently listened to our show.
