There is so much to learn in elementary school! The Educational Support Team works on Academic Goals including: basic reading skills, reading fluency, and comprehension, math computation and math concepts such as place value, number sense, etc., and writing skills. We also work on non-academic goals such as carryover of therapy goals, social skills and behavior.
I welcome partnering with parents to provide consistency on goals across both the home and school settings. Parents, please reach out to me if you have a need at home and would like to consult with school staff!
READING instruction: The majority of my students require specially designed instruction in reading. The programs I use are based in Orton Gillingham's systems for teaching reading to students with Dyslexia and other reading disabilities. This highly structured program includes 10 critical skills that are addressed in every lesson. These include automatic recall of high frequency words, phonemic awareness activities, word work, phonics instruction, word reading drills, passage reading with comprehension questions and fluency, and spelling of individual sounds, individual words, and complete sentences.
MATH instruction: For most students, specialized instruction in math includes supporting the grade level math curriculum, while also taking time to address skills that should have been learned previously, but were not. Filling those gaps in previous skills while building the current skills is our goal. For students in grades 3 and 4, learning their multiplication facts is critical to being successful in math in those grades through grade 12. Both the classroom teachers and our special education groups work on multiplication facts, but it is always helpful to your students to also work on those facts at home.
