Memories from First Grade!
We had our first garden day this week. The students helped aerate the soil and plant peas, lettuce and radishes. We added all of the weeds from the garden beds to the compost bin and the children loved giving the composter a spin.
First graders had a great time learning about the science of bubbles. Ask your first grader what they put inside a bubble!
We used flashlights and gnome figures to determine what makes a shadow move if the object that has the shadow does not move. Ask your child about the results of our experiment!
The first graders had a wonderful time completing a scavenger hunt, a leprechaun directed drawing and themed center activities to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Scroll the pictures to the left to see some of the fun!
The first graders researched a polar animal of their choosing and used what their research to create a diorama depicting their animals habitat as well as writing and informative writing piece detailing 4 facts they learned about their animal.
First grade learned the magic of magic e! We used our magic wands to send magic e's magic over one letter to land on a vowel and make a vowel man appear! Ask your child about the magic e song we learned!
The first graders worked hard all month documenting acts of kindness that happen in the classroom, at recess and on the bus. What a kind group of kiddos!
We spent most of January learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. We learned about his life as well as the causes and movements he supported and inspired. We talked about how important it is that we do not treat people differently because of the color of their skin. As we transition to the month of February, our conversations have shifted to talking about our classroom community and how we all bring something unique and special to our classroom. The first graders created snowflake sculptures to help us remember that our differences are beautiful and are what make us special, just like our snowflakes.
First graders use a variety of math tools to explore shapes, number sense, addition and subtraction.
Using three dimensional shapes to create new shapes and patterns.
Using a ten frame and double sided counters to make a ten to add.
Completing the number chart while exploring number patterns and discovering how numbers relate to one another.
First Graders used their engineering skills to design, build and improve on their gingerbread house plans. Through trial and error all of the first graders were able to create a gingerbread house that was able to stand on its own! Thank you to families for donating the materials to make our houses possible!
The first graders practiced counting objects by choosing a gift bag and counting the objects inside. After counting their objects they recorded the number on their recording sheet. The packages contained anywhere from 1 to over 200 objects inside! The students sorted the objects into ten groups to help keep track of their counting. This strategy is especially important when counting large groups of objects.
The first graders have worked hard during Math and Reading PALS to earn points to fill their point sheet. Math and Reading PALS work to increase math and reading fluency. They chose to have a Popcorn Party once they filled their point sheet. Great work first grade!
The first graders learned about the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and planned and created their own balloon to feature in the HES First Grade Thanksgiving Parade! We had so much fun parading around the school!
