We will spend the majority of our year focused on multiplication, division and fractions using the Eureka math program and other supplements. This is students' first official exposure to multiplication and division, so we will spend a lot of time creating arrays and equal groups. This will help students to learn their multiplication facts and develop strategies for when they forget. Our fractional work will focus on identifying unit fractions, working with fractions on a number line and identifying equivalent fractions.
This trimester we will learn that multiplication is based in equal groups. We will spend a lot of time building equal groups and arrays with concrete manipulatives as well as skip counting by 3s and 4s. We will also learn about the commutative property (sometimes we call it a flip fact) and will get a brief introduction to the distributive property.
