About 26% of adult Americans have a diagnosable mental health disorder at any given time. Psychotherapy is talk therapy in which a trained mental health professional facilitates communication to help clients positively change their way of thinking. Psychotherapy has proven to be an effective treatment used to treat individuals with mental illness. Medicaid and private insurance cover the treatment of mental health disorders, including psychotherapy.
WHAT TAKES PLACE DURING PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Individuals receiving psychotherapy can overcome past trauma by developing coping mechanisms and strategies that will help them live a healthy and productive life.
Individuals can examine and express their beliefs and behaviors in a safe and unbiased environment.
A therapist will objectively look at the situation and may provide new insights.
A therapist can help clients understand why they react to situations in a specific way and help the client find healthy ways to deal with stressful or negative situations.
Psychotherapy helps clients change their thought patterns, resulting in a better outlook on life, better self-esteem, and better relationships.
DISORDERS THAT PSYCHOTHERAPY CAN HELP WITH
Personality disorders, such as paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder

TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY
PSYCHOANALYSIS THERAPY - The therapist will help the client discover subconscious motivations behind their thoughts, feelings, and any problematic behaviors. Patients can examine their emotions and desires in a safe environment guided by a professional.
COGNITIVE THERAPY - Cognitive therapy carefully examines the client's thought patterns based on the belief that dysfunctional thinking is the cause of harmful emotions or actions. The client will learn how to change their thoughts, which will then change how they feel and behave.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY - This is a combination of cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy and focuses on both thoughts and behaviors. Cognitive Behavioral therapy will look at how someone's beliefs influence their behaviors or actions.
SYSTEM DESENSITIZING - Therapist may use this treatment to help clients suffering from phobias. A client will be desensitized to their phobia by repeated exposure to whatever is causing their anxiety.
HUMANISTIC THERAPY - This type of treatment is an umbrella term for a subgroup of therapy approaches. The humanistic approach focuses on helping the client achieve their maximum potential. The client will work on making rational decisions and be aware of the need to be concerned and respect other people who are influenced by their choices. Below is a list of 3 different therapy approaches that fall under the humanistic therapy umbrella.
CLIENT-CENTERED THERAPY - This therapy relies heavily on the client's concerns, interests, and inner experiences. The client is an expert on their inner feelings as opposed to giving authority to the therapist's views only.
GESTALT THERAPY - This approach emphasizes practicing mindfulness and taking responsibility for one's actions.
EXISTENTIAL THERAPY - This approach focuses on self-determination, free will, and helping the client find meaning in their life.
INTEGRATIVE OR HOLISTIC THERAPY - Most therapists will use several approaches or blend elements of these approaches to meet their client's individual needs as best as possible.
