During a recent Qawwali performance held at the university, we had the privilege of engaging with accomplished Qawwali artists. The artists shared their journey, experiences, and the essence of Qawwali, which resonates with audiences on various occasions.

They revealed that their initiation into Qawwali began in childhood, inheriting the craft from their ancestors. This generational transmission of knowledge and passion for Qawwali has nurtured a profound respect and dedication towards their art. The artists emphasised the importance of continuous practice, or "riyaz," which is integral to honing their skills and maintaining the sanctity of their performance.

The versatility of Qawwali allows it to cater to a wide range of emotions and occasions, from celebrations like birthdays and weddings to sombre events such as funerals. The artists adeptly adjust their performances to match the mood of their audience, showcasing the dynamic and empathetic nature of Qawwali. Unlike structured musical performances, Qawwali thrives on spontaneity and the artists' ability to gauge and respond to the audience's mood, making each performance unique and deeply personal.
